Uhuh,... uhuh,...

more of the same from Beck.

The topic on this thread is about Ampex/Quantegy 408. Disregard anything I've said, to this point, as it's only references I mined off the web. Follow Beck. He knows. ;)

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, Beck.

I'm sorry for picking apart your posts and analyzing them. I'm sorry for being wrong, when I should have kept my mouth shut.

Let's go on in peace, Beck.

I think we've both displayed our relative differences in style and substance.

I get irritated, too. I'm sorry. I've posted some scathing stuff, and then immediately edited it down, for the sake of not fanning the flames. It's down to petty nonsense. Enough is enough. Flame wars belong in the cave, anyway.

Peace.

is 408 same as 480???

Just curious Beck, if 408 is the same as 480?

And can you use 480 for machines that are bias for 406 and 456?

And of course, if they also can run thicker tape 1.5 mil as you mentioned above.

I understand that 480 is similar in bias to 406?

Thank you once again for both your wisdom, knowledge and experience on reel tapes and machines.

You should write a reel to reel reference book and then you can get paid real well for all your knowlege and it will be around for future generations to read and to study !!!:D

480 has a higher coercivity than 406 [370 vs 330) and thus requires more bias to sound right. They are rather dis-similar in bias.

BTW, I'm not sure if yours was a typo but 408 is just 406 "wound slightly differently for Nagra recorders":
