Quantegy 408?

It's the wrong format, sure, but do it anyway! ;)

It's as good a place as any, until you can make a website.
Quantegy doesn't seem to have the 408 tape specs on their site.

But for the most part I'm done with this circus.

Shit, Tim, don't leave! You, along with a VERY select few are the source of some truly great info! Fuck mis-information! I feel that any thinking person can wade through all that shit and came to their own conclusion. It's like a bunch of books sitting on library shelves .. I'll read the one that makes sense to me. Your posts obviously are well researched and I always learn somethin' from em. I know I'm not alone in saying that your contribution here is appreciated.

Geez,... [edited]
Why not just simply state that 408 is a descendant of 3M 808, & that it's not exactly like 406 by specs, and leave it at that?
[edited]Goodbye.

Let's try not to lose sight of the original question.

408 is apparently not the same as 406/407, it's not optimal for the 22-4, but it should work okay & certainly won't harm anything.

The "spec" differences between what is actually 406/407 & 408 is probably very minimal,... & all but negligible to anyone but the labcoated brainiacs that spend most of their time in the lab.

Anyway,... it's analog. No one cares. Not to the point of getting in a war over specs, anyway. The bottom line is,... that many of these similar and competing brands of tape are not identical, but they're made to be similar enough to be interchangeable, while each brand touts a certain formula or spec that it's "specialized" for, therefore making it "superior" to the competition.

Beyond all the specs, the best and most valid advice is still to "try it and see if it works".

Beck,...

for all your library studied knowledge, people rightly regard you as a valuable resource.

However, I've found you giving categorically wrong answers to relatively simple questions more than once, that you clearly didn't know anything about. Don't go there with me. Don't act superior, don't act the martyr, and stop it with the tantrums.

Leave if you want, but don't think it proves any point, by doing so.

Tim,

I hope you remember you always are welcome over at TASCAM Forums and I'd also like to remind you that you share a moderation position in the DIY section that could use your help as well to get it off the ground a bit better as was hoped for when it was started.

If you truly want to share your insight and wisdom, please contribute over there.

Cheers! :)

Utter bullshit Reel. I'm not trying to prove a point. I just have no time to contribute to this forum for nothing only to have people that don't have a clue attacking me when I say good morning. And you in particular to my constant amazement take things I say completely sideways, taking personal offence when you are the farthest thing from my mind as I'm posting. -- That's your problem.

Would you care to explain how regebro's unsubstantiated post about 408/406 tape was hailed by you simply because it was at odds with what I said. The same regebro who you normally can't find a good thing to say about. It's all too telling.

In fact the main problem certain individuals have with members like me is that my answers are correct and in depth. And it's not library research, but rather over 25 years working with people who knew what they were doing in the television and music recording industry. Sure, you can find a couple (litterally maybe two) where I took an educated guess and had it wrong.

But if you're going to make a statement like that above you better show some examples of these categorically wrong answers. -- Lets have it. I stand proudly behind my contribution to this forum and my assertion that this board consists primarily of perpetual newbies. If you can' t see that... well, I don't know what to say.

Unfortunately as in the work world there is an organizational culture here. It's human nature and its ugly as sin. The process works to maintain equilibrium. That is, if someone is perceived as being in a different league with experience and knowledge they are harassed and hounded until they leave or conform to the status quo. "Mirror, mirror on the wall..." and if you feel you aren't the fairest you set out to kill the one you perceive is overshadowing you.

And I know it galls some people that I have no self-doubt, am virtually immune to peer pressure and care nothing about number of post or "Rep Power."

Angry? Shouldn't I be? If I went around correcting every piece of erroneous info from you and unnamed others I would have twice as many posts. While I let bullshit slide without saying a thing out of respect you pick apart my posts, often out of context trying to find a hole in it. So yes, angry but yet flattered.

You have a valid point Daniel. It's more work than it appears though when people here just want to debate for all the wrong reasons, like a bunch of yahooligans. I'm not talking about real differences of opinion such as Otari vs. Tascam or Emtec vs. Quantegy -- that's all fine. That's the kind of stuff I would like to talk about.

What I find so intolerable is that some are so oblivious to basic foundational musical, acoustical and electronic principles -- the common ground necessary to proceed with intelligent discussion. And even that is ok if they don't try to pretend otherwise.

I like to contribute because I'm a true audiophile to the core and I hope someday music and the equipment to capture it will emerge from these dark ages.

What I don't want to do is go back to 7th grade with the kinds of conversations I've seen here since the beginning. It just doesn't interest me. I will probably spend more time at Tascasm Forums http://www.vaporpark.com/invboard/index.php. My persona there is a lot less like General George Patten than it is here because the feel of the site doesn't bring it out. Ghost has set a very professional tone there and most people respect it.

You are always free to send me a private message anytime with questions or suggestions and hang out at vaporpark with us. I just feel HR.com is becoming too disfunctional to help the people who are serious. And since I'm Scotch-Irish -- direct descendant of Robert the Bruce and King James IV no less it is quite natural for me to be drawn into endless mean-spirited dialogue without tiring or relenting -- but it wastes precious time so I feel the need to make a change. We'll see. :)

I will do all of the above and once again thank you for your contributions here at HR.com.

Best wishes,

Daniel :)

Please don't leave this forum!

I only discovered this in late December and already I have learned huge amounts of information, rediscovered the passion for this kind of stuff that I had lost over ten years of being a Chartered Accountant then an IT Guy and, in a couple of isolated sitations, hopefully managed to give some useful information.

I do appreciate all of the posts that you make. For example, I would never have known to keep an eye out for shedding when archiving old historical material. Without the Analog(ue!) Only forum I wouldn't have wanted to find the 16 track masters of recording I did with friends 12 years ago on an MSR-16.

Your input is appreciated. There are people here who don't know as much as you, and they need corrected. There are people here who are passionate about their point of view and need the other side; no matter who is right or wrong.

This forum has the potential to be a wonderful resource, or a complete waste of time. The only way it will be the former and not the latter is with Beck, Ghost, Reel, cjacek and all of the other 'senior members' who keep us newbies under control.

That's my 10c worth anyway. If anyone doesn't like it, they can fill my garage with used equipment so I can't fit my car in there and it rusts... :)

===========================

Okay Beck, I truly have no interest in entering a shouting match with you. You may be good. You may be more of a pro than I'll ever be. You may have mastered specs that I've not even heard of. Try to educated the dimwit masses, and please leave me out of it. Thank you. Good morning.

As for myself, I'm not concerned with post count. I don't care about any imagined pecking order on a hobby driven bbs. Honestly, I don't even care about Quantegy 408, because I don't use it. I do, however, try to contribute little bits of substance, here & there. If that's not to your liking, Beck, then I'm sorry.

I like regebro. He knows it. I like to poke fun at regebro sometimes, and we certainly think along different lines, but that's okay. I think he understands that. I guess I don't mean so much that his quote above was so brilliant, but maybe more brilliant for digging it up. Because it clashes with Beck's reality, is interesting, yes, but is not my concern. Please dont' make this personal.

To storm out of any bbs in a tirade is a childish tantrum. I guess innate genius types are prone to tantrums, just like the rest of us common folk.

Beck, wherever you go, I hope the music and technical industry someday evolves and catches up to your genius.

Attention:...

Let the Analog Forum be put on notice, that Beck is a genius and Reel is a dumass!!

Put e'thing Beck recommends into practice immediately, and verify e'thing Reel says with Beck first, before applying!!

-[This has been a public service announcement]-

I've reconsidered:...

I still like you, regebro. ;)

I really don't want to take sides and wish to be as diplomatic as possible but feel that Tim (Beck) is getting jumped on rather unfairly. Ok, so he made an error ... but do we really want to discredit his other informative and eye opening posts because of a stupid belt/direct drive issue ? Perhaps the syncasets are not Beck's "forte" ? That's fine 'cause no body knows everything about everything. Still, Beck possesses other knowledge about stuff I've never read on this forum. So we all have different characters and ways of dealing with "issues" but we shouldn't discredit people. I consider ARP, Ghost and Beck to be invaluable sources of info and wish we could just treat one another with the respect each of us deserves.

Well said, Daniel.

We are stronger and better together with everyone contributing what they can and wish to contribute.

As for mistakes, we have ALL made them and will continue to make them. After all, we are only human.

Whatever Tim decided to do is his decision and I will respect his wished to stay or to reduce or cut out completely his participation here. It's up to him.

Personally, I would prefer that he continues to participate here as he has unique fields of knowledge that we can all benefit from.

Cheers! :)

I'm not trying to tear down someone's rep!!

Nor would I care to. Let's get that straight off, eh?

What I react to is someone who posts to "teach everybody a lesson", as if he/she is infallible, which she/he clearly is not. Don't make absolute statements which are wrong, and then storm out of here in a tantrum.

Beck & I have always agreed on 99% of the topics we'd ever both participated in. I think, at least speaking for myself, that most misunderstandings arise from differences on semantics, while we basically agree on the substance. Remembering back to the days of tascam bbs, & the first time I got introduced to TBeck, it was the same then as it is now.

Reel,

Your words and your actions are at odds.

By the way if the "absolute statement" you are referring to is my original answer to this thread then no, you are wrong. This thread, which is now some 40 posts long could have been only 2 posts long -- the original question and my correct answer.

If you think you have to run around trying to find a chink in my armor, as you see it, that is just sick. I'm not running for messiah and am not interested in a 100% has it right every time reputation. That's not attainable and not the point. However your comment that you've found me "giving categorically wrong answers to relatively simple questions" is completely unsupportable. The onus is now on you to prove that -- either fire that pistol or holster your weapon.

And I'm not talking about typos or forgetting a model number. Will you be correcting my spelling next, like Verner? The issue is a persons overall philosophy and knowledge of recording. This is a home recording forum. People are often using relatively marginal equipment. Things like tape selection and alignment are absolutely crucial. And yes you can get entirely professional results with an informed approach. A devil may care attitude about these issues will put you at the bottom of the class if not outright failure. I know that excellence is attainable. It's called confidence not arrogance.

If you have no interest in entering into a shouting match, as you call it, then why do you start these things? You have made this very personal. I have never once been on the offensive regarding one of your informational posts. I have only responded to your unnecessary attacks on me. If you want to be left out of it then stop with the stalking mentality and leave me out of it.

Childish tantrum is your characterization. You might be confusing your way of thinking and motives with mine. This is no tantrum it's just pure disgust. The nature of the exchanges on this forum has given me pause to reevaluate the usefulness of this format to exchange information.

This has nothing to do with me "acting" superior but everything to do with you feeling inferior. I can't do anything on my end to remedy that.

I've given you the benefit of the doubt in the past -- more than you'll ever know. But I've now gone from considering you a knowledgably peer, to pitying you, to just thinking you're being a jerk. I would never have expected this conduct from the Reel Person I knew at the old Tascam BBS. To me, you had all the credibility in the world. If you wanted to piss me off you've accomplished that. If you were just some slouch it wouldn't bother me that much, but you've let me down and been anything but a friend.

-Tim
