Hello everyone,

I am a newbie to HR and I was wondering. What is the purpose of a D/I box? I know it has something to do with unbalance and balance connection, but is it necessary for recording synths, guitars or maybe even a DJ mixer. I do a lot of recording in Pro tool HD. And I hear so much about mixing in the box. Right now I have my synths, drum machines and other sound modules connected directly to a 192 and 96 i/0. Any Opinions? ( Is it a huge difference in sound quality? )

The "Direct Injection" device is used for taking an instrument level signal and making it a line level signal. It also makes an unbalanced connection a balanced connection. They're usually used on acoustic guitars, electric Bass, and synths in live situations. They're also used for synths and bass in studios - but Acoustic guitars are much better miced in the studio.

There are two seperate types of DI's - active and passive. A passive DI uses no power, while an active DI uses phantom power. They most often are pluged into a preamp.

What I'm thinking is that you're plugging straight into your line level input. Some sources this is good for, like your DJ unit might be because it's likely sending a signal out at line level. However, Bass and Synth and acoustic should have a DI in between them and the mixer in live situations. You can get away without one if you need to.

If you decide to get one, don't chince out...get a good one! Try the Radial J series...probably the JDI (a passive DI equipped with Jensen transfomers). It's fantastic for what you're looking for.
