Quality versus Quantity

Hello Everyone,

I have a question about recording media. I am planning on getting a Korg D1600 digital recorder with the CD-R in the bay. So we will basically have our finished cd when we are done.

My main question is for duplication. Is there anything wrong with buying the standard CD-R's that you can get anywhere or is there anything special that I should get to ensure a better quality. We will probably just be using either PC's for the duplication or one of the stand along duplicators that makes two or three at a time.

Or should we send them somewhere for mass duplicatation?? If so, does anyone know where or how much is costs? Your expertise in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

God Bless!

I'm no expert, but I think there are differences in the range of quality, even between CDRs and I would say the answer to your question depends on your purpose. Do you want to produce CDs to sell to folks or to give to friends or use for a demo? And I'm not sure it has anything to do with sound quality rather than physical quality. From the reading that i've done I've gathered that different CDRs have different lifespans, some will claim up to 10 years, some much more (time it takes for your data to be unreadable or corrupt). And I would think that a professionally mastered and reproduced disc would last longer than something you can produce yourself. But I could be totally wrong, I would wait for some more responses :)

What the result is with CD-R depends on a combination of the CD-R writer hardware, software, media and speed. I recommend that you get brand media. It works best, and ok, even if it costs $1 per CD instead of $0.5 it's still pretty cheap...

Mass duplication will cost you more, unless you do big enough series to not use CD-R but actually press the CD's, which is unlikely.

I don't think buying a duplication machine is worth it, really. But they could have dropped in prices recently...

cd pricing for duplication for (100 cds) goes from about $200 - $700 and then add another $75 to $100 for every 50 cds after that.

Guitar center is/was (not sure which) having a special 50 cds dupped for 49.99 including cd, text on cd, jewel case and i think an insert.
