Q: Why does metal suck?

I am not sure any kind of music 'sucks,' but I am sure that everyone has certain likes and dislikes associated with a certain style.

In my case, I don't really dig Rap or Hip-Hop, but when I heard Pink's songs 'Get the Party Started,' I really liked the beat. I thought it was a cool dance groove.

There are some alternative bands that are making good music these days and there are a few country artists (very few) that play good music with a real story behind them.

My favorite is still the metal style that originated in the 1980s, especially the style of the power ballad.

I don't think a particular style 'sucks' just because I don't like it...Bert

Nu-Metal and the very old heavy metal sucks. The inbetween stuff is good!

To say one genre of music sucks is to narrow your mind.

I don't listen to country music or folk music, but I have worked many a festival as a stagehand and been thouroughly impressed and, many times, entertained by those two styles....bluegrass as well.

I learned a long time ago that nothing really sucks. If you hear something on the radio and think "That sucks" that's cool, that's your opinion. They are on the readio and you're not so obviously someone thought they were quite the opposite of suck.

Who really sucks as far the grand scheme of things anyway?

Variety is what makes music the great escape.

.....metalheads get so defensive......;)

I got 3 complete memoirs out of you. Thats not good. :o

Seriously, what are you, a poet now?

Nope, I suck at poetry :D

I'm just one of those peeps who can listen to Floyd, BTO, Spears, Statler Bro., Ozzy, Maiden, Vivaldi, Hank Jr, Armstrong, Yellow Jackets, BBK, etc etc and not say that any of 'em suck.

They may not all grab me and hold my attention, but I don't think they suck. I'm tired of the Stones. When I hear a Stones song come on the radio, I change the station. It doesn't suck, I'm just burnt out.

When I hear a Creed or Godsmack tune, I do the same thing for the same reason.

No poetry to it. Those cats have contracts, royalties, and themselves on posters that groupies treasure.

No. Progressive.

Going back to ELP, Yes, and Genesis up through the progressive metal bands of today which combine jazz timing, metal riffs, and classical string/piano work.

So yeah, my mind is pretty open to all forms of music.

As far as rap/hiphop goes, I gained alot of respect for LL Cool J when I saw that he toured with a live band behind him. Not a sequencer. The same went for Arrested Development and Ice T in Body Count.

An open mind is a bad thing around here? :(

The funny thing about what we like.

We like it because we want to.

What I mean is that its funny, as we were growing up, we listened to what was playing and picked what we wanted to listen to based on everything else that came with it.

We are products of our enviroment.

We wanted to be cool, or get some chick, or look and sound a certain way to other ppl. Thats how it gets started. Then you commit to it subconsiously and the rest is history. Thats why you get ppl referring mostly to things they listened to mostly during a influencing part of their life.

It's alot like religion. Those who believe, are that way because of how they were taught to. MOST of them anyhow.

Try listening to Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, or Children of Bodom, then tell me it blows. I will seriously hunt you down if you say it again.

Negativity is always so productive though.

Anyhow what is Metal?

Can we be any more General??

Can we have a real debate/argument/thread that isn't an utter waste of time???

Well, not everyone I guess...

There are quite a few different styles of metal, guess it depends on what you like....

Myself, I like melodic metal the best, has to have killer vocals...
The metal bands that just growl and yell and couldn't carry a tune dont do it for me...

In my opinion, the best singers in metal are..

Roy Khan - Kamelot/Conception
Geoff Tate - Queensryche
DC Cooper - Silent Force/Royal Hunt
Ray Alder - Fates Warning/Engine

To name a few...

There is no end to the different genre name's out there (within metal). What's metal to one 'metalhead; isn't always metal to another 'metalhead'. For example it might be more like Hard Rock :D.

OK well, I'll bite, I like gutteral brutal vocals, but it has to be done tastefully :p . Some vocalists are good at it, most vocalists are not so good at it (I'm only referring to all of the 'gutteral vocalists). With this kind of music, it isn't about lyrics obviously, but what sounds good (insert sarcasm here) with the accompanying instruments. In most cases the mood is not neccesarily a happy one, so why should the vocalist sound happy? :) Darkness, evil, gloom and doom, all of that good stuff.

By no means do I exclusively listen to gutteral stuff. Phil Anselmo comes to mind as far as great metal vocalists are concerned. He gives that in your face raspy, aggressive till your nuts explode delivery that is required for a band like Pantera.

Other big names that come to mind (Hetfield, Mustaine, Halford and some guy named Ozzy :D)

All of the above are personal viewpoints, so don't get offended eh!

metal... do you put Winger and Slayer in the same category?

Saying metal blows is kind of silly... I'm not saying I agree or disagree, it's just a statement obviously meant to provoke those of us with nothing better to do than blow ourselves.
