It's nice to see you coming back to your senses. 
Anyway, Maiden relies heavilly on what Thin Lizzy did, but gave it a new level, and hence Thin Lizzy would qualify for hard rock/classic rock, and Maiden=New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
But yeah, I just don't dig Slipknot and all those poser bands that need psycho/serial killer images, to cover up their substandard music qualities. I know most people now hate 80's hair metal, but if you take away the 15lbs of make up, the big hair and colored spandex, you have a bunch of guys that really know their instruments! I mean, I really love how guys like Richie Sambora, George Lynch, Warren DeMartini, Zakk Wylde (he was 'hair' too, back then) and even Mick Mars did.
