What's up guys? Well I'm in the process of helping a buddy of mine record an album, promote, get a website, etc.. pretty much everything for my final project in college. We just got the site up and running and we want to put a few songs on there. What's the best way to do this. We don't want them to be fully downloadable for free because the album will be out in about 2 months. Is there any way to put full songs on there where you can't download them or should I just put a verse and chorus to give fans an idea. What's your opinions and how would I even go about doing this. Thanks alot for the help guys sorry for all the questions but I'm learning. Thanks again!

Make two or three of the songs freely downloadable.

Add clips for the rest.

How are you publishing the album in the end?

Thanks for the reply. We're actually not really sure what we are going to do about the publishing yet. I'm actually just now learning about the business aspects of the record industry. If you have any suggestions or info I'm very open to them. thanks again!

One of the better things I have seen done is a montage collection of a minute of each song, the best parts.

Use a Flash or Windows Media Player jukebox to stream the audio off of your server. Give them 2 or 3 full songs to listen to. 30-60 second clips are lame.
Don't let the have free downloads. Instead of people emailing your free mp3 to thier friends they will be emailing a link to your site. If they want your songs they should pay for them. Set up a PayPal button that initiates an automatic download after you have thier cash.

Thanks how would I put that up and where would I get it?

On my site, I have the option of making my songs available for streaming, but not downloadable unless they pay. I have a site-wide music player so that my music plays as soon as someone goes to my site. If they like a song, they can go to the STORE and download it for .99 cents (That's the price I set, you can decide). I also have a FREE MUSIC page where I put a couple of song up for free download.Click on my link below if you want to check it out. The hosts are here: www.bandzoogle.com

Thanks alot guys. RAMI did you ever decide the place to have you discs duplicated? We're about to be doing that to and have been checking the posts.
I checked out your website Rami, you've got talent. Sounds good as well. Where did you get that streaming player that sits at the bottom of the screen?

Hey DmC...Thanx alot.

First of all, I got my CD's done at www.KUNAKI.com Great service and the best price I could find...AND no minimum order. If you're in the States, they'll even send you a free CD to see if you like it. I'm not in the U.S. so I couldn't get a free one, but I just ordered 10 to start and was very satisfied.

The site-wide music player on my site comes with the site. Here is the host: www.bandzoogle.com These guys are also musicians so the sites are made FOR musicians. Totally easy to put together and upload stuff.

Hi, sadly I have to say that there's a few problems with your website.

Firstly, when I first followed your link I got a blank page. It seems to be a javascript problem, which to me is no surprise. I often find Javascript to be a liability; that's why I don't use it. Your hosts are using a Cold Fusion server, why do they need to use frames and Javascript to show a flash movie?

When I found a browser that would run the javascript, I feel that there is another issue. ie. automatically playing the music on the webpage.

No arguments, this is a VERY BAD IDEA. "Yes.... but!". No ifs, no buts, this pisses many people off and their first impression of you and your band will be bad.

For instance, I am often listening to internet radio or music whilst surfing and mixed with the modern habit of having loads of tabbed webpages open at the same time, well, you can just imagine how I feel when one of those pages starts blasting me with unbidden music.

Both of these mean you lose......... customers, fans, good will.

Oh, I'd better say, I like the rest of the design of the site (good work) and (surprisingly for me) I love the "Ivory Tower" track, maybe it's the politics ;-)

So this is your first post here and you chose ME??? I feel so special. :D

I disagree, but thanx for your OPINION.
I've never had anyone tell me they get a blank page when they go to my site. I get the traffic reports, and every month, there might be 3 server errors total. Maybe the site just happened to be down at the time you happened to visit, which is rare. Or maybe, your computer just has a problem with javascript, which is unfortunate.

Personally, when I go to someone's site and they have music playing right away, it tends to keep me there alot longer than if there isn't any music. Unless I don't like the music, in which case, it doesn't make a difference either way.
But I appreciate your OPINION. :)

Thanks for the reply RAMI. Do you pay 15 a month for the website? We're using Homestead for free but I don't think it's very good. Actually I'm not even the artist and I'm not doing the website. My friend is the artist and my other friend is doing the website. For my college senior project I'm recording, engineering, producing, booking, getting cd manufactured and artwork, getting site up, etc. etc and in control of throwing a cd release party with full on promotion and whatnot. And I'm supposed to learn everything about music business in this time. Yeah pretty much everything! Imagine my surprise when I found out I had to do all of the in one semester with an artist that lives 14 hours away and is about as reliable as the cable guy. Anyway, if you don't mind would you check out the site at http://www.ronetheridge.com/ and tell me what you think and add suggestions.Feel free to pm me. Actually this applies to everyone. Thanks again for the help.

The site was up, and it is a Javascript issue. Javascript is dealt with client side by whichever browser you happen to be using. It's got nothing to do with my computer generally, the Javascript doesn't work with all browsers and can leave a blank page. This means you lose out.

The bit about Javascript isn't an opinion, it's a fact.

You miss my point here. In this case it's not your opinion that counts. Think of why you have a website, it might suite you, but that's not the point.

Cool. As soon as I have anyone else tell me it caused them a problem, I'll look into it. So far, you're the only one. I appreciate it. Thanx.

I don't miss your point at all, I just disagree with it. You have an opinion on it, so do I. It would be a little pompus and arrogant for either one of us to think our opinion is the only one that matters. I'm not talking about what suits me, I'm saying that I personally don't mind having music start right away when I go to SOMEONE ELSE'S website. Many people have commented how they love checking out all the pages on my site while listening to my music. So far, you're the only one who has commented negatively about it. I'll go with the majority until it changes. Thanx alot for your input. I'll keep it in mind.
