Can anyone explain to me the purpose of placing a compression pedal, or a graphic equalizer pedal in a rig for?

What do these things help to eliminate or maintain, and are they really necesssary?

I was just thinking of in general, or what kind of rigs are they used in.

I really just want to know what their main function is.

Many guitar and bass players use compressor pedals (or rack units) in their live set-ups. For guitar, compression can add sustain and presence. For bass it can make it sound fat and control the dynamics. It's used more for the tone than it is for controlling dynamics in a live situation.

The downside of using compression is that it amplifies string noises and fret buzzes too.

There are quite a few good pedals available. The Boss CS3 is good and it's pretty affordable. They also make one called the Bass Enhancer for bass. My friend has one and swears by it. Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter is highly regarded. Tech 21 Bass Compactor has good reviews but I've never used it.
