purchasing a condenser mic, need opinions.

4040 and DMP3 sounds great value for $300. You can safely ignore DJL once he starts getting narky - he's given his perfectly valid opinion but him and Phil have form on this so it's best to stay out unless you enjoy a good fight

This one's not a fight (unless he wants it to be, but I hope not). Given his experiences with so many different mics, I'm just wondering what out there is better than the 4040 for 3 bills...I can't think of many mics that are better all-around performers in that price range. Given the fact that the street (read "eBay") price seems to have gone down on them, it's almost like getting the DMP for free...and I think it's safe to say that the DMP is a better pre than the ones built into the mixer.

Well, I'm not 100% sure Phil. But I'd be more than willing to bet that it'd have the letters K, S and M in the name

Of the mics bandied around here my gut reaction would be either the shure KSM or the AT4040. Both have good reputations.

If somebody has a $300 budget it also means that they are at a comparable point in their entire scheme. Put a $5000 mic in a $300 room?
