4040 and DMP3 sounds great value for $300. You can safely ignore DJL once he starts getting narky - he's given his perfectly valid opinion but him and Phil have form on this so it's best to stay out unless you enjoy a good fight :):):)

This one's not a fight (unless he wants it to be, but I hope not). Given his experiences with so many different mics, I'm just wondering what out there is better than the 4040 for 3 bills...I can't think of many mics that are better all-around performers in that price range. Given the fact that the street (read "eBay") price seems to have gone down on them, it's almost like getting the DMP for free...and I think it's safe to say that the DMP is a better pre than the ones built into the mixer.

I agree - I wasn't having a go either! It sounds like the best use of the dough to me.

Well, I'm not 100% sure Phil. But I'd be more than willing to bet that it'd have the letters K, S and M in the name ;)

In fact, I'm Shure (sic) of it :D

alright, thanks guys. yeah i think i'm going to go with the 4040 and the dmp3. thanks again for all the great info.

Of the mics bandied around here my gut reaction would be either the shure KSM or the AT4040. Both have good reputations.

If somebody has a $300 budget it also means that they are at a comparable point in their entire scheme. Put a $5000 mic in a $300 room?
