Punch in

I've recorded some basic stuff on the humble setup that I have now, and this crossed my mind: how many of you regularly use punch in? I try not to, as it seems like cheating, and so it takes me awhile to get a take I'm happy with! But the psychological aspects of recording (ie you can play it perfectly a million times with the red light off ) make it a practical tool. I was curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on that.

Big fan here. Saves a lot of time. No reason to scrap a good take over a bum note.

I'm a punch-in machine. Very usefull and frequently used feature. The only reason to feel bad about using it is if you can hear the punch points.

Actually one time I did an entire album without any punch ins. The band wanted to play it rough warts-and-all kind of approach.

It was on my OLD home recording setup from around 2001 and therefore it doesn't sound like a studio recording, unfortunately. It was recorded in a rental office unit too. Total guerilla (sp) recording style.

Yeah, I can definately understand it if you are recording in a pro studio, or course, when rates are like $100 per hour. No reason not to do it at home too, I guess.

I suppose you are right about multi-tracking

If that's cheating, then I am a cheater. I don't do it a lot, because I rehearse the hell out of my tracks before I punch the record button, but sometimes there is that one little thing that bugs me, and the rest of the track is good, and I don't think I could play it the same way....
