Well deserved win. That's a great mix.

I had a hard time deciding between you and giles.
Youre mix was top rate.

Hey this is not fair! it said: 8/20/04 in the other thread! I was counting on having a few more days. Don't set a date if you don't plan to stick with it.

I posted IN the thread that i was changing the date!
Go check for yourself!
I tried to edit that the date was changed.
But after a certain time limit that the webmaster set, you cant edit the main thread post....
Frankly man i only get 60 gigs a month for my website and this contest cost me 40 of them.
Which is cool, but its a little more than i expected!
I shut it down early because, i want my web site up for the rest of the month!(wich im sure you can understand?)
Dont be upset please.
This is my first time ive done one of these things, and
itll go smoother nextime.
IMHO i thought this was more about just having fun mixing than competition.
Im not sure what else to say except for sorry.
You should still post your mix though!
Id love ta hear it.
And if youre mix smokes on Giles' mix ill do something special for ya', i promise.
But dont be pissed.:o
This was supposed to be fun!
Finster. :)

Nice mix Giles. I liked the Acoustic (chorus?) sound. Very punchy mix. Nice touch of Reverb on the vox.

Did you post the equipment that you used ?

Thanks Xfinsterx for the tracks and the bandwidth that you ate up.

This was fun !

Dave

Thanks guys. Ok here is the skinny on the mix.

I Mixed this completely in digital performer (DP4) MAC OS X.3.5

The gtr was a done with 5 plugins. Waves meta Flanger, DUY Z-Room, UAD-1 1176, Waves ren Ax, MOTU Delay

Subtlety was what I was going for. as it was his lead instrument at the top of the mix the idea was to spread it a little bit (not too much) so it would create a backdrop for his lead vocal. But keep it true to an acoustic.

Basically that is what I was thinking he was after when I listend to the mix on a dry run.

I struggled with the toms. I felt they were too thin so I attempted to beef them up a bit. I never touched the strings except to get them out of the way of the lead vox so they could be big but not in the way.

I felt the mix needed to say hello when the band came in so I retained the impact of the kick so that the change was accentuated (obviously I overdid it the 1st run through)

I Used 3 different reverbs on the Lead vocal so that the space surrounding his vocal matched the growth of the track. I also used 2 compressors on the Lead as well. One to tame peaks and one to over all smooth it and keep it from moving without crunching Dynamics.

So all my secrets are out. LOL This is just stuff I learned to do with digital to make it sound more analog.

The Final thing which is what I really liked about this practice session......

I got to automate my verbs and Eq's. Never really did that before but this song, I felt, needed that extra touch, so i treated it like I would if I was mixing a Live show.

In a Live Show you are constantly tweaking EQ's during the show to match the mood of the song, the eb of the crowd and the Dynamics of the show. That was way cool and I will be even more aggressive with it in the future.

Here is a direct link of all the gear I have in my studio up here in good old Highland Park, MI

www.patden./pd/equipment.htm

You will notice I do have pro-tools. I only use it to transfer files to DP4. I prefer DP4 as a mixing environment. And guys, you Gotta get a UAD-1 card. I could not exist without an 1176 and a LA-2A. I never even touched the pultec for this mix.

Lastly I appreciate all the critiques. As the guy who trained me said (while I was sitting in has family room lookiag at all the gold and platinum he has on the wall) the key to being a great mixer, is remember (1) there is always somebody better than you and I have a lot of guys I look up to.. Jon gass, Neal pogue and (2) Practice Practice practice practice. Cuz you will never truly arrive you will just get better. :)

Sounds like a Grammy award speech. LOL. I Pray we get a grammy and a Dove award for my wifes project.....or future projects. :)

well, none the less, congrads Giles :)

However, I would think about this kind of thing before setting a date next time xfinsterx ;) I was hoping on getting that SDCM, since I only have 1 dynamic and 1 LDCM (home studio) and my guitar tracks are only so-so with teh large condensor ;)

won't work.... try www.patden.com/pd/equipment.htm

Well, I REALLY liked this contest. I didn't have time to finish my mix (starting new job...), but I learned a ton from it anyway.

I NEVER have real drums to mic, and my tracks generally don't need so much "pampering".

I just wanted to thank finsterx for going through the trouble.... I know alot of us really appreciate it. Thanks. :)

One final note.... did anyone notice how much Behringer/MXL gear was in the winner's equipment list?? Maybe this is proof that it ain't the gear, it'd the engineer. Nice job giles117!!!!

One more final note... (yeah, that's 2...) Sorry Blue Bear didn't get his track in... I was curious... :D

Good winning mix. Sounds really nice. But it seems to get a bit lost at the end with the strings maybe being too overpowering against the vocals.
What a good idea to have mixing comps. Hope i can join in on one of them even if i only have a digital porta studio! My computer doesnt like mixing programmes.

Thanks for that input Eck. I did feel that as i was mixing it but after I did the 1st automation pass of the strings I said to myself, it's just practice. I normally spend anywhere from 8 to 16 hours on a mix. this was done in 2 so... Just means I need to listen faster (a phrase used in mixing a live show, listen fast and listen well. you only got 75 minutes to get the whole show right. LOL then it's over. LOL)

Actually should have re-ridden the lead vox when I was done riding the strings.

the only reason this mix won is cause its complex. It still has a hell of a lot of low end issues between the kick the synth and the bass track and the reason he got good results was not cause he was a mixing pro, but he had the right tools to work with. Overal its a decent mix, but I've heard better using a live mixer crappy dynamic mics run into cool edit by a 16 year old
"shot your ego"

i have to admit im very impressed with your r an b pop sounds off your sample mp3s. I mean really impressed and was shocked when i saw your gear list. I exspected much worse. Goes to show you somone who knows what they are doing can get great results with less then optimal gear, as long as you have great tallent and you do. Great job hope to hear more work from your studio in the future

Uh... ummm... okay... where was your mix??? I must have missed that one.

not cause he was a mixing pro, but he had the right tools to work with.

Uh.... yeah.... Behringer and MXL mics..... the very best stuff to work with...
No, he won because he knows how to use what he's got. Nothing more, nothing less. It is what it is....

Whatever...
