Thanks guys. Ok here is the skinny on the mix.
I Mixed this completely in digital performer (DP4) MAC OS X.3.5
The gtr was a done with 5 plugins.
Waves meta Flanger, DUY Z-Room, UAD-1 1176, Waves ren Ax, MOTU Delay
Subtlety was what I was going for. as it was his lead instrument at the top of the mix the idea was to spread it a little bit (not too much) so it would create a backdrop for his lead vocal. But keep it true to an acoustic.
Basically that is what I was thinking he was after when I listend to the mix on a dry run.
I struggled with the toms. I felt they were too thin so I attempted to beef them up a bit. I never touched the strings except to get them out of the way of the lead vox so they could be big but not in the way.
I felt the mix needed to say hello when the band came in so I retained the impact of the kick so that the change was accentuated (obviously I overdid it the 1st run through)
I Used 3 different reverbs on the Lead vocal so that the space surrounding his vocal matched the growth of the track. I also used 2 compressors on the Lead as well. One to tame peaks and one to over all smooth it and keep it from moving without crunching Dynamics.
So all my secrets are out. LOL This is just stuff I learned to do with digital to make it sound more analog.
The Final thing which is what I really liked about this practice session......
I got to automate my verbs and Eq's. Never really did that before but this song, I felt, needed that extra touch, so i treated it like I would if I was mixing a Live show.
In a Live Show you are constantly tweaking EQ's during the show to match the mood of the song, the eb of the crowd and the Dynamics of the show. That was way cool and I will be even more aggressive with it in the future.
Here is a direct link of all the gear I have in my studio up here in good old Highland Park, MI

You will notice I do have pro-tools. I only use it to transfer files to DP4. I prefer DP4 as a mixing environment. And guys, you Gotta get a UAD-1 card. I could not exist without an 1176 and
a LA-2A. I never even touched the pultec for this mix.
Lastly I appreciate all the critiques. As the guy who trained me said (while I was sitting in has family room lookiag at all the gold and platinum he has on the wall) the key to being a great mixer, is remember (1) there is always somebody better than you and I have a lot of guys I look up to.. Jon gass, Neal pogue and (2) Practice Practice practice practice. Cuz you will never truly arrive you will just get better.
Sounds like a Grammy award speech. LOL. I Pray we get a grammy and a Dove award for my wifes project.....or future projects.
