This aint my final mix even though its called final mix, made a mistake.
Added a cool intro, not thought of an ending yet. Thats the hard bit.
Im happy with it.
Any things jump out at yous at all?
Hows the intro Finster, i think you might like this intro. :)
Eck
Hey, you stole my intro!..... Uh..... Even though I haven't posted mine yet. lol :D

I used that same part as an intro in mine. But I only used the "So I hold the last straw"..... I haven't tweaked it in yet, it's just kind of sitting there and is overlapping the drum intro at the moment, but I'm gonna play with it and try to make it all cool sounding. ;)

This is maybe a good point to mention the judging system. There are seven categories (the Blue Bear scale):

Blue Bear (paraphrase) said:
MIX BALANCE/LEVELS -- how the tracks were blended... were mix elements blurred, jumping out uncontrollably, or just right.

LOW END -- how well the low-end was balanced and sat in the mix.

AIR/TOP END -- how well the high-end was balanced and sat in the mix.

IMAGING -- how well the soundstage of the mix was laid out between the speakers.

DEPTH/SPACE/AMBIENCE -- how well the tracks sat together... was each individual track clearly sitting in its own space relative to the other tracks?

OVERALL MIX IMPACT -- I added another category mainly because there were certain songs that sounded good sonically, but lacked punch, and vice-versa.....

OVERALL MIX QUALITY -- this was a bit of a catch-all -- very subjective - did something in the mix speak to me or not.

Other than the catch-all OVERALL MIX QUALITY property, I did not specifically take into account whether more tracks were added or changed compared to the original tracks. All mixes were eval'd strictly on the sound qualities listed above, so any "enhancements/changes" would still fall under those characteristics.

So whatever you do for an intro or outro only directly affects the last category.

Oh. I just deleted it.
Arghh, might re do it then. Do you know how it will be judged? Is it on solidity of the mix more or more so the extra creativity parts?

Eck

Ah. Just read the post above.
Cool I understand the judging system.

This is the first post for like... a few days!
I think people might be getting a little fatigued, I know I was, but Ive finished my final mix for defo. Waiting till judgement day to post.
This mix has alot of energy although the balance and EQ doesnt seem right to me. LOUD guitars!
Eck

My wife and I are gonna sit down and bang on this tonight, I hope to have a first full mix to post by tomorrow sometime. (Since my draft went summarily ignored.. ;) )

I took a listen.
Drums are hidden. The guitar and bass sit together quite well although the bass doesnt have enough presence.
The vocals are fekin awsome! :D
Eck

Thanks Eck! Wow, you think the drums are hidden? I've been pulling them back and back, thinking they were overbearing! Man, musical styles demand such different approaches to mixing! I guess that's sorta the point, though, eh?

I took a very sublime approach to the vox in that preliminary mix, glad you liked it! :)

just got the files on cd from NL5 (thanks mate!), and man...i have to say that i really don't know where to start. 6 tracks of bass guitar? 20 tracks of vocal harmonies? 713 tracks of drums? i'm a little bit agape at this moment.

i'll prolly play around with this one some, but i can't say that i'll be giving it the best college effort. i think i'm a little out of my league here.....especially given the nonexisting amount of free time i've got. :p

although, i sat my 2 month old son on my lap last night while i started dicking around with the drums, and he was taken in by all of the channel meter lights on the screen--eyes wide open watching it all go. it's already well-established that he loves drums, so he was a happy little drooling guy hanging there with dad. :D

cheers,
wade

Thats Awesome!
My son wanted to play drums to it.....I told him to implement them with Drumagog.... :D :D :D :D :D
I still have to work on the Toms!!!! :)

OK, my Final is up!!!

I gotta tell you; I want to find this band's recording engineer and BEAT him/her. 17 tracks of drums, and none of them had any ass at all. All upper mids, no thump, and the cymbals were all so full of mid, they sounded like garbage can lids. All of the stringed instrument tracks appear to have been recorded in such a way that at the board, the levels were OK, but the ambient sound pressure in the studio was so high that the mic diaphragms were distorting. Betcha they had some preamps screaming for their lives. There should have been a clean direct-plug bass track. It was damned near impossible to come up with a pocket that had any kick but wasn't boomy or wallowy.

Beyond the questionable acquisition, this band fookin KICKS ASS. I can't stand this kind of music, but this tune was A-game all the way.

I'm gonna start listening to some other takes from people now that mine is done; I didn't want to overly color my choices by listening to what everyone was doing.

I'm a Smooth Jazz/Pop/EZL person, so this was COMPLETELY not my element. Thank God I have a headbanger wife with a serious rock ear to help me make certain choices.

Anyway, here is my entry, I hope you like my intro treatment...

Circle

OK, I listened to everyones that I could find... Besides me (heh ;) ), I like Eck's best, but I think he should leave his superlatively cool alternate intro in; it was innovative and very well executed!! The whole thing was really super, Eck. My wife said "Wow!". She's a tough one to please (musically speaking), so good on ya, mate!

Sounded to me like a lot of folks tried to replace the snare with samples, and some of them ran into sync issues. I don't know how to replace something like that, or I might have tried it. How do you do that?

You have no idea how much I wanted to replace the bass part with my OWN bass playing, just to get a clean damned acquisition, but I'm sure that would have violated the rules, so I didn't.
