I'm re-tracking a few of my songs, as you can see by the fact that I'm posting tunes I already posted before. I re-did the drums and vocals to this one, too.

At this point, I'm not sure about levels any more. I spent the last day tracking and mixing the drums, so I'm having trouble hearing if they're too loud or not. Same with the vocals, since I did them just before the drums.

It's not my best tune, but I just want to finish it and move on. So, I'm mainly concerned with the mix and, more specifically, the levels.

If you hear anything standing out as too loud or too low, please point it out to me. I've lost perspective at this point in time.

Thanx alot.

Sounds really great overall, as usual. Snare sounds fantastic on this track. Nice, tight pop. Better than usual. It's very articulate and all of your stick-work shows up perfectly. Stellar job there. Everything else sounds really good too. Guitars, vocals, bass everything. Good levels for all that stuff. Everything is clear, present, and there.

Only tiny nit I have is that the kick, for me, can come up just a hair. It gets lost a few times. Most people probably wouldn't notice or care because the kick is generally fine, but there's a few spots that it kind of goes away under the bass. That's all I got though. Great job overall.

Awesome! Cool, man. I doubted myself on this one because I mixed it so quick. Other times, I put up a tune expecting to be told it's perfect, and there's all kinds of stuff wrong with the mix. Even the kik was probably perfect on this, and I turned it down a hair just before the final mix. So, I'll turn it back up.

Another thing that's funny is that this is the first time I use a different snare. I'm using a semi-cheap Sonar metal snare. I wanted a trashier sound, so I threw this snare on my kit to see how it would sound, and it turns out to be the best snare sound I ever got. Fucking weird.

Thanx man. Looks like I found a new snare to record with. Now I have to resist the temptation to go back and re-track the drums for all my songs with this snare. :D

Sounds bass light to me from 75-150. The kick has a nice round tone, but I think the bass(guitar) is rolled off a bit too much. Overall nice recording.

No rolling off on the bass, certainly not at those frequencies. I have it boosted at 125hz with a low shelf. Thanx man.

Lol. Right on. Keep using it. It sounds a lot tighter and poppier than your other one (Acrolite?). There's nothing wrong with your other one, but the snare on this was the first thing to really pop out at me with a "wow". Sounds great.

Cool. Amazing how some happy accidents happen. I really thought this snare would either sound trashy, or not useable at all. There's nothing on it and it rings like a mother fucker. I was actually trying to get that trashy, ringy sound you hear in a lot of pop tunes, and I was kind of disappointed when it didn't record as "cheap" as I wanted it to. Yeah, my other snare is fibreglass, like the rest of my kit (Tempus/Milestone). Maybe I'll try the whole Sonar kit in the studio one day, if I ever get a few weeks in a row where the band's not gigging.

Thanx a lot Greg.

Lol. I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I guess you of all people could probably appreciate this and get a chuckle....

I tracked some drums today, and they were hard (for me). I went through it for like an hour trying to get it burned into my mind so I could play it without having to think "what am I gonna do next?". So I finally get comfy with it, start tracking, and after like 17 takes I'm still fucking up all over the place. Dropping sticks, playing the wrong parts, etc. Finally, after like another hour, I finally get a full-pull done with no mistakes and it felt good. I immediately saved it and shut everything off and went and sat under the ceiling fan. I go back into the room about two hours later and just happen to notice a fucking broken snare wire dangling under the snare. I fired up the project and listened to the tracks, and sho nuff, you can hear that damn wire banging and rattling and buzzing and flopping around. The snare fills sound horrible. Lol. I deleted everything and will give it another go tomorrow. :laughings:

Sounds good to me.
Very open and balanced.
And pretty damn tight playing as well.

Wonderful.

If I had any nits, the vocal seems a little loud, and the mix seems a touch light in the low mids. I can hear the bass very well...it's articulate as hell...it just feels a little thin. I don't think it would hurt you to leave some of the low end in the guitars that you probably took out.

Don't let either one of those nits mean more than they do, which is practically nothing. It sounds real good.

Your stuff is always tight, dude. This one is a bit different in that it seems a bit tighter. I could take a lesson or two from you. Great job, man.

Shit, I hate that. Well, at least you'll have the part tight and probably nail it in one take. I always say there's a reason for that kind of stuff happening. On more than one occasion, I've gone through a few takes of a drum track, making a mistake, going through it again, etc....and then, once I get a good take down, I realize that I forgot to plug the kik drum mic in or I forgot to measure my overheads after I hit one by mistake earlier in the day, etc....I get pissed off when that happens. But, then I always find thait's a good thing I screwed up because in bed that night, I'll come up with a genius idea or a variation I didn't think of that makes the track way better than if I nailed it the day before.

Thanx Chris. I think I'm starting to find the vocals a bit loud, too, the more I listen to this. At least the lead vocals. The "gang" vocals might be ok, but I'll probably turn down the lead a bit. I'll also look into getting more beef in the mix, considering you're not the first to mention something about the low mids. I don't think the problem's in the bass guitar, though. Probably more in the guitars, like you suggested. Thanx a lot Chris.

Thanx Po. We can all learn from each other here.

Sounds great, I'm really digging the kick sound this time. Very tight, I always look forward to your stuff! Not sure why you thought the snare would sound trashy, it sounds kick ass.

very nice ...... I can't really add anything to the comments but I wanted to pop in and say it sounds great as usual. Snare really does 'pop' ...... kick MIGHT be a little low ...... I'm on cans so it sounds fine in them but it could maybe be a bit more present ......... but the bass sounds a little light on these cans too so don't read too much into that.

I like all your stuff ...... this is no exception.

Cool song & the drum tracks are great - hmm cheap can be good!
Your bass always sounds ace.
I like the vocal levels but then I like your voice.
Isn't it horrid when a snare hair dangles here & there?
I'm always impressed with the separation you get in your kit.

Thanx saads. Yes, I took time to work on my kik. I think I took it for granted over the years and realized it needed to be tuned again. That's why my last couple of tunes didn't have that kik I was used to getting.
The reason I thought the snare would sound trashy is because it actually sounds a lot worse in the room than it came it out in the recording. It's a light, metal snare and I put no dampening on it. It really recorded a lot better than it sounds acoustically. Kind of weird, but I'm not complaining. :D

Thanx Ray. Yeah, I hate hanging snares. That's what ruined the Florida election in 2000, isn't it?
