Hi... my name is AMEN and im new here... I’ve been observing this place for a while and finally decided to join... due to the fact that this place seems real well put together and it seems like everyone here is helpful.

I own PROTOOLS 6.4 with the M-BOX and a MXL 990 condenser mic... I currently produce petty little beats and I emcee over them... “sage francis/ atmosphere” style...

My question was... is the MXL 990 a good choice for a home studio? And how do I get a clean crisp sound from my equipment? And is this a ok set up for just me rapping?

THANK YOU... HOPE TO GET SOME FEED BACK ON MY DILEMMA.

The 990 is probably fine for what you're doing. I had one at one point and it worked ok but was a little too sibilant for my taste. Everyone's voice is different though.

As far as crisp/clean sound.........how is your sound now? For rapping, I would probably set the mic in the quietest area of the house and surround yourself with some thick draped blankets to deaden the sound. The 990, being a condensor, picks up alot of detail and will pickup any noise and the room reflections along with your voice.

while the 990 is not the greatest mic in the world, its not too bad, for the price. for a clean sound, yes, you want to deaden the surroundings. you also want to EQ the recording to get it crisp. depending on your voice, you have to work with it. you could either get an actual equalizer, or their might be a plugin with the MBOX. i have the digi 002 and there are about 8 EQ plugins. my fav. is the IK mult. T-Racks eq. i get a nice sound with that. you could also get a better mic.

thanx

well... i just wanna say thank you for taking the time to reply to my questions... and being helpful...

peace.
