Protools Mastering?

Maybe a newbie-type question:

Are plugins specifically for mixdown/mastering worth it? Can I acheive the same thing with the compressor and other plugins? If you recommend an add-on, is there one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? And where can I learn more about mastering in genera?

Oh, and a real newbie question: I notice no forum that's Protools specific. Is there another forum where Protoolerites meet? (and I made that word up...)

As far as the first part of your question is concerned, yes, mastering plug-ins are worth it.
Second, they do differ from 'normal' plug-ins. For use with Pro Tools I would consider the ones made by TC, Sony and Waves.
None of them are cheap, and this is reflected in the quality of the plug-ins.
To learn more about mastering I would recommend for you to start with a book called "the mastering engineer's handbook" written by Bobby Owinski, published by Mix Books. Its generally available at large bookstores.

Just a little question.

I wonder how they came up with the term Mastering for, lets say,
post processing.

I wonder whats the average amount of years it takes to become a Master within a specific Craft.

For instance.

I make Home Brew ( Well used to )
We have a local Brew Master down here.
Im gonna ask him how he got that title and how long it took him.

The only way to make an accurate assessment in the Brew Master's case would have been to start tasting his brews from the moment he started up to today, on a daily basis, so you can accurately assess(looks to much like asses) his progress.
(the moral of that is - make it a priority to find a couple of Brew Masters to be)

That makes since.
But I am more interested in his title than his brew's flavor.

How does one in the Navy become a Master Chief?
His achievements?
Awards ?
Years of service?
Or did he just join the Navy and ended up a Master Chief?

In the old days, even before Sjoko2 there were things called records. Records are stamped from a die, the die is called a master. The die is cut by the mastering engineer. The only guy that was able to cut the master was the one with the most amount of experience, ears and between the ears. The guy/gal running the cutter had to make decision on the fly about many things that could spell disaster to to hight specialized and expensive equipment. Simplistic, but effective.

I agree. I believe we are on the same page.
When I read the original post and the word "Mastering" is mentioned, then to ask what plugin to use just makes me feel like the word Mastering is inapropriate. I think it should be called somthing else unless the experience is there.

Anyone out there with a Lathe ?

master may have been a proper title at one time or another, but mastering has become a common noun (you can tell because the' can come before it - 'who did THE mastering on that album') and a common verb (you can see this because it takes tense - 'the album was masterED by him') with a specific meaning that all of us understand. so get off you high horses about mastering not being done with plug-ins, and those of use who can't afford $500 an hour as not having mastered our albums. i know a recording 'master' had nothing to do with any of the music i make. that's why i hang out at HOME recording sites.
