We just got a FOSTEX MR8 8 track recorder....

What are the proper steps to record a 4 piece band? We have all the necessary equipment, i just am confused how to to it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

What are the 4 pieces of the band, what style of music do you do and what kind of equipment do you have other than the Fostex? Detail this stuff a bit better and you'll probably get a bunch of help here.

Also where are you recording and what kind of physical setup problems might there be?

If I understood correctly, you want the typical order that studios record bands. The typical way is to record drums, then bass, guitars, and then vocals.

Hope I could help!

Here's the setup

Ok....so we have our rehearsal room with all our equipment in it. All In circular shape. Right to left, Drums......guitar.......Bass......then Vocal Mic. We have everything running right into our 800 watt Mixer in a separate room, and the mixer is hooked up to the recorder. Equipment we have: We have the drums totally mic'd.....snare, toms, bass drum,, floor tom, and cymbals. My guitar is mic'd with a instrument mic, and the bass is also.

I just recorded with a guy last week, only acoustic stuff....so i had somewhat of an idea how to record after that. The way he did it, we made a scratch track of me and him playing and him singing along too. then I recorded a guitar on the next track, then another guitar on the other track, then bass on the next, then vocals......we didnt have drums on it.....so i dinnt know where ur suppose to do that with an Hard rock/metal band like mine.

I dindt know how to record, so tonite, i recorded a guitar track on track one....then i wanted to do a 2nd guitar on the 2nd track and it was like impossible to get it to sound right through the headphones.... how do u guys do it, i just listened to Matt Fusiek's recordings and they are great, thats what i want!!! HOW?????? Explain how we should approach this??

plus...

Am i suppose to like record like....sit in another room with headphones on when trying to play my guitar thru my loud ass half stack in th other room, or how do people do it??? I just had a hard time hearin shit thru the headphones tonite.

It takes many years to become a competent recordist and a lot of experience to put out something that sounds "pro".......... you should pick-up a book or two on studio and recording techniques and start learning. Be prepared for a steep learning curve before you come away with anything even close to good-sounding...

Some book suggestions and useful articles on the Articles page of my studio site: http://www.bluebearsound.com/articles
