Processor problems

I have just picked up a Quad4 Digitech processor and when I fixed it to the mix and used a mic I keep getting a hissing sound like an untunned FM radio station...just wanting to know if I am doing the right thing or not...

You can't connect a mic directly to that unit... a mic's low-level signal needs a mic pre to be brought up to line-level........
