I've been messing around with my 488 for a couple weeks, using it not to record but as a base for playing and writing music through my headphones since I am currently without an amp, but I noticed today that the first two 1/4" inputs' signals are significantly weaker and worse-sounding than the 3rd and 4th inputs'. I've been setting the trim on these tracks all the way up to get a distortion effect, so that could be the source of the problem. Has this ever happened to anyone? And how would you suggest I go about fixing it?

Thanks,
Adrian

There are no 1/8" inputs on a 488 unless yours has been modified.

Please describe the signal path including instruments/mics.

Oh, sorry. I can't believe I typed 1/8". I meant 1/4".

Yea it could be you pushed them too hard and blew the front end out of those two channels.

okay, any suggestions on how to go about fixing this?
