Problem with playing files from Tascam DP004 to computer

Good morning all. I bought my husband a Tascam DP004 for his birthday and today we attempted for the first time to copy files from it to our laptop. The files came across in a .001 file extension format, which I used 7-zip to extract. The problem is, however, that we can't get these extracted files to play on the computer. We have tried Windows Media Player and Realplayer - can anyone point me to the next step in the process to enable us to just hear these files on the laptop?

Did you back up or export?

Backup creates a file that is backup only and can probably only be reloaded into the deck. (so you can store and keep deck from getting full and reload later) its a format only the deck can read. is my guess.

Export creates a wave file which a computer can play.........its in the manual I just read it.
