problem with delay on MIDI controller keyboard

When I hit the keys on my M-Audio Radium61 MIDI Controller, there is a significant delay before I hear the sound coming out of my computer's speakers. What's going on? There is an option called "Aftertouch," but turning it up or down has no effect. Help!

What are the rest of your system specs? Are you using softsyths?

Sounds like you need a soundcard upgrade.

I'm using a 1.15 GHz CPU, with 768 MB of RAM and my HD runs at 5400 RPM. I'm not using sound synths; just whatever my sound card has. I don't even know what kind of sound card I have, how can I check? Hope this helps you help me...

You're experiencing latency. you need a better soundcard/

Are you on a laptop?

No, I'm not using a laptop. It looks like I've got onboard sound--VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM); whatever that is.

As I said before, you need a better soundcard with decent WDM or ASIO drivers.
