I have a number of phantom powered units but currently have to run them through a Mackie HUI to be able to use them - my Delta 1010 (primary soundcard) has no XLR inputs. The problem is everything sounds coloured after it passes through the HUI...
Can anyone suggest a cheap fix to the problem? I have the op[tion of getting a Samson S-Phantom http://www.musiciansbuy.com/SAMSON_S_PHANTOM.html at my local shop, it's the only such unit there.

I mainly use a Radial J48 for DI'ing dry guitar (for reamping through a n X-Amp later) and a Sansamp Bass Driver via Phantom on the HUI, will these units go ok through the S-Phantom?? The S-Phantom says it is perfectly suited to condenser mics, is there a adifference in terms of the signal between a condenser mic and a DI box? It looks like the perfect cheap solution to my untrained eye. Will it do the job

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

I am guessing that you need to run through the mackie because you do not have preamps. So you could replace your phantom power units and the mackie with a small preamp.

I am a big fan of the FMR RNP. It is pretty clean sounding unit and would give you two powered mic ins to record.

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty new to this so I didnt think I would have to go and get a preamp considering the Delta has 10 ins and 10 outs as it is (I only track guitars at home) - up til now it's been perfect. I don't want to replace the Mackie as it is great for controlling Cubase (editing, mixing and recording). Plus the Phantom powered units are pretty great at what they do - Sansamp driver is like a DI bass rig and the J38 is one of the better DI boxes for capturing ultra clean guitar straight from the pickups. I'll do some reading up on the FMR RNP and see what it's all about. I'm only really getting into recording at home now so I'm not sure what I should and shouldn't have - probably will have to buy some more gear at some stage but I'd like to keep it to the minimum (recovering GASaholic).
