Problem: Can't 'layer' audio on a single channel..

Hi :)

I've recently set up a legit copy of Cubase 5 in a local secondary school in their main recording suite.

I have used cubase before and feel comfortable with most things on the interface.

However, about 2 weeks after installation, (I fear one of the students might of pressed a button or changed a setting) suddenly audio events can't be layered on any given channel.

I'll try and approximately describe what happens...
When an audio event is dragged on top (even just so it slightly overlaps) another existing audio event it priorities the one I've moved but deletes anything that it overlaps. I can retrieve the the data of the effected event by dragging the corner tags and restoring the data but any events that have been completed overlapped would have to be retrieved from the pool, which is easily done and wastes much time in lessons.

It doesn't display the overlapped audio as a darker shade of grey now like I'm used to seeing.

This has the exact same symptom when I'm using the console to record - ie, instead of stacking the events (or in lane view, displaying multiple 'rows' of events) it simple overrides with the same effect. The same when doing a 'loop' record; it appears like it's saving the multiple takes, but when you press stop it only saves the last take!

I hope it is just a case of a button I've missed and not something glitchy, it just doesn't look like a glitch, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for any help, I'd appreciate it..
David.

I think both of these issues are from the options that where changed on the transport.

If you have a legit copy checkout page 78 of the manual.

On your transport you should see the words "Replace" and "Keep Last", right click "Replace" and select "Normal". Right click "Keep Last" and I think you want "Mix" or maybe "Stacked"

Hi - I am in school now and I've got until lunch to respond! so I did some screen shots for you.

Thanks so much for your reply tetra!!!!!!, I looked up the pages in the manual you were referring to but they seem to relate to stacking and replacing during recording. After doing a little test it seems that the recording side of it is now ok (maybe after changing those options in the transport panel like you said).

Anyway, here's the image of the various stages involved.
I'm still convinced it's just a button in some menu that I'm not aware of it, although I feel to have been round the whole program at least twice..

I understand the problem but I cannot recreate it. Have you tried moving around audio events created after you changed the settings on the transport? Maybe the setting to delete underlying audio is saved with the event.

Tetra, thanks for that suggestion, but I have had no avail doing that. I could see where you were coming from though.

I've once again been through most settings Cubase has to offer to try and get rid of the problem.

I'm at the stage of wondering whether it would be quicker to re-install? anybody got any tips on how I could keep my settings (like any vst .dll's, menu shortcuts changes, vst connections program additions etc.) so that it would be easier to get back to where I was before?

Appreciated, David. :(

Yah, I looked at everything I could possibly think of and couldn't find a thing.

Have you tried updating to cubase 5.5? It's free.

Tried re-installing, it did nothing, tried the update, and still nothing changed. :-(

The computer in question is running win 7 (32-bit) with a M-audio delta 1010 interface.

This is defeating me!! anyone else have any clues??

Thanks so much Tetra for your continued support! :-)

David
