I've seen studios and big name musicians use pro tools before. How does this rate to Sonar XL 2.0?

I would think cost is a factor, but what about ease of use?

It's not the program, it's the person using it. Seriously...

Personally, I'd say the best is SONAR!

Even though I still like "pingers" better ;) , I agree with Moskus and the old adage: "It's not the wand, it's the witch."

Pro Tools is ubiquitous becuase it was first. Sonar is every bit as good, as are Nuendo, Logic, and many others.

there pretty much the same except sonar supports more open formats..like vst and rewire

sonar is a superior midi program hands down

pro tools maybe superior audio wise...

Pro Tools (TDM) has better (audio) plugins, and is more stable than anything else.

Sonar beats it for plugins (instrument), compatibility, and MIDI.

The prices for comparable hardware and software systems will be similar.

I've used Pro Tools Free on Win98 :D so take it with salt & grain.. SONAR is alot easier program to run, yet more powerfull for my demand. I'm MIDI minded anyway. And anybody mentioned soundfonts setting & configuration ? SONAR rules :)

k... But how about just recording live instruments? Sonar or Pro Tools? =)

MrStitch,

For recording live instruments either program will gain the same result. For the better result it would more relate to the signal path..... The quality of the microphones, cables, AD converters etc. That is where the most difference will be seen.

For what it is worth, I've heard that the pre-amp's in the Digi001 isn't that good... 002 I can't comment about.

Once again, both will do just fine for quality. eg. both can handle 24/96 along with your hardware (decent PC, soundcard, etc..). It's just rather the matter of taste.

never less, never more.

Download demos and try the different programs... (can you download a demo of a PT-system?)

You can download ProTools Free , however it only works on Windows 98 and ME in the IBM world or Mac OS9. It doesn't work on XP.

I used that program last year when I recorded a song which I'm going to re-record in Sonar. I was using it only for MIDI because it was free (didn't have the cash at the time to get SONAR) and it was able to Sync up to my Roland 840Ex Workstation for MIDI playback.

No XP??? I thought I saw that Protools DOES support XP. It seemed that it was pretty much the format .
