how much CPU do you generally need at least when running pro tools with an average sized session. pc. pro tools 9 + MP please thank you.
i've found how much it is for essentials but can't find it for these.

i can run pretty intense sessions on my laptop (2.2ghz c2d, 4gb ram, intel x-25m ssd)

you're talking 20/30 tracks, plenty of synths,,elastic audio etc.

I think the reason it runs so well is the Hdd though.. the same session literally wont playback if i use the stock 5400rpm drive.

why?

Depends on the CPU and OS - I'm running PT8.4 on a 2x dual core 3ghz Zeon with 8gb Ram big session lots of VST and not breaking sweat. I think as long as its a modern multicore processor you shouldn't worry - good call on the HDD tho... get the fastest or a SS if you can.

alot of plug ins need like 1.8 ghz a least to run so does that mean that a higher spec is need to to run 2 for example.
probably a stupid question.

Are you running this at the moment?
Within PT you can adjust CPU load and tune the demand on your system.
With most modern multi-processors (I can only speak for INTEL) there is loads of headroom for even the most demanding sessions.
Ive run 16 real instrument tracks with effects, Strike and Hybrid with no probs.
I'm running Win 7 64, I use the same machine for surfing, email and gaming.

no not yet. theres a couple i want to run but i dont have a massive cpu.
