I'm interested in having a home studio. I just downloaded Pro tool Free. Now I need a list of things to start recording.
I own an eletric and acoustic guitar and keyboard. Please help! These are the list of things I think I need.

Mic/mic stand
midi interface and cables
cd burner
*Pro tool also advised not to record onto the program. So, where do I record?*

I'm I missing anything? I want to start off very small. I'm learning as I go. The Guitar Center and other places have been trying to get me to purchase. Mbox (I need a Mac) or Digi 001 ($800). Which both are out of my price range. What should I do? Remember I'm in the learning stages and I like to start off cheap. My budget is $500.

Im a Pro Tools man myself, and I love Pro Tools... But, DON'T DO IT!!!!!

Pro Tools Free sucks.... it will most likely crash..... Everyone I know who uses it has had some sort of problem, and there is no user support other than the bbs, and people there are far from helpul.

Go with N-Track, if your just starting out..

Learn the basics and save your cash up, and then move onto the Digi 001 system.

Most of what you learn in N-track will translate closely into the Pro Tools LE system (Digi 001)

Im going to say the same thing as VOXVENDOR. I have PT free and its provides absolutely no reliability. Ive crashed more often with it, even just importing a stereo track for editing can be painful. Its nothing compared to the LE version. Im going to go with N-Tracks as soon as I get my network fixed.

Peace,
Dennis

How's your sound card? Most stock cards only have two inputs (aka one stereo input). You may need more if you record more than two tracks at a time. Also, the SoundBlaster sound cards are not so great for audio recording. OK to start out, but they just don't sound so good.

If you decide to do ProTools free rather than n-track, you can record two channels at once with a wave editor like Sound Forge. But n-track seems a better bet. You'll still want a wave editor for editing, though. Sound Forge is a good one. Others like Wavelab. I hear there's a free one called Asia, but I know nothing about it.

What mic ya got? You may want a condenser for acoustic guitar recording, and maybe vocals too.

Thank you!!!!

I've printed out the User Guide for n-Track. I'll read it once I get home. Do I need to purchase any of the things I listed?

Midi box and cables
I may need a new soundcard

The cash I have is burning a hole in my pocket.

Send your cash to me, I'll put that fire in your pocket right out.

Things you still need:

-Microphone - I'd get a shure SM-57 - a staple among home recording folk. It's good for vocals and instruments both.

-You can record with it into the mic input of your computer, but I'd highly recommend against it. You can pickup a cheap-ola 4 or 6 channel mixer for 50 or 60 bucks at Guitar Center. Just plug in the outputs to the LINE-IN of your sound card and go. Trust me, your mic jack sucks. (keep in mind, you're going to probably throw this mixer away later and replace it with a better one when you really start getting into it)

-I'm not sure if N-Track does Midi. You might want to leave that for down the road. You can record your keyboard just fine without it. I'd forget the cables for now. N-Track is a good starter program though, I'd stick with it.

-You might even want to hold off on the sound card for now. Don't invest in one without doing your homework on it. I did this song when I first started years ago with nothing but my keyboard, drum machine, Cubasis (Steinberg's $79 teaser program), and the piece of crap on-board sound card that came with my cheap-o computer at the time.

What are you doing for drums? Are you recording them live or do you still need a drum machine?

If you're recording them live, you'll need at very least a second mic.

Good luck

Drums

I was going to download a program called Acid for drums. What do you think? Will that work? I'm soooo new at this.

I recommend Fruity Loops for drums, but you'll need to find samples on the net if you want anything other than dance samples. Do a search and you'll find several threads on the subject of sites for samples.

Good luck,

-J
