Pro to consumer snake question

I want to connect an api lunchbox to my latest aquisition(a Fostex e-16) via an xlrf to rca snake. Is this pretty standard or do I need some sort of level transformer to avoid overloading the deck's inputs? Is riding the preamp output acceptable to most around these parts? Will there be any loss of fidelity by going this route?

Straight to tape from the preamp is my goal. Thanks.

Ahem.......I tried the search function already.

I guess I shouldn't have used the word pro in the thread title. I know how that word gets a bad wrap in the analog section.

How about some google search suggestions or a link? Believe me, I've tried and I keep coming up with nada.

I know I have some customers that like to hit the API's output hard to saturate the transformer. I don't know this from personal experience, and I don't know the details of the different models, etc. Too rich for my blood. But they buy inline pads to use on the output to compensate.

If you aren't worried about that, then yes, you can trim back the preamp gain. Otherwise, build a pad into your snake.

Not familiar with the outputs on the on the API. Are they fixed at +4 or are they variable?

I guess I should clarify. It's an Api Lunchbox loaded with Purple Biz and Old School Audio pres(the api knockoffs). The reference level is +4 dbu non-switchable. http://www.purpleaudio.com/Product/Biz.html

I have no clue about loss of fidelity. What's fidelity? :)

The intangible positive quality I'm hoping the Fostex will lend to my tunes
providing I can wire it up correctly.

Thanks for the links. :)

Thanks man. The pres provide both gain and level controls. I'm hoping I can drive the gain hard while dialing way back the level and be in the -10dbv ballpark.

I really don't like the idea of under utilizing the ability of these preamps.
