Does anyone have one of these and how do you like it? I am thinking of getting one and I would love to have some feedback. I have an ART Dual Tube MP, so comparisons in addition to opinions would be helpful. Thanks.

I have both a Tube MP and an MP20. I love them both, but they're totally different from each other. The MP20 is clean, super-squeaky clean, with a very clear, uncolored sound. I would definitely describe it (and, c'mon guys, I'm comparing it to a tube MP, not a great river or something that costs three or four times as much) as "transparent." For me, it is THE thing to use on acoustic guitars, etc.... Has amazing amounts of gain and headroom, and even the built-in instrument preamps sound frighteningly good - I frequently blow myself across the room because the instrument pres are so quiet that I have no idea how high I have everything turned up.

The only "drawback" of the MP20 IS how clean it is - if you're used to the throaty tube sound from a slightly overdriven tube MP, you might be disappointed in vocals through the MP20. It would totally depend on the style of music you're recording, whether you want a "dirty" tube sound or a "clean" class a sound. These two units really are night and day, and I find that I really need both extremes of sound - for instance, bass and acoustic guitars recorded through the MP20 combined with vocals through a hot-running tube mp... Those are the best sounds I've EVER recorded (granted, yeah, we're talking home hobby studio here, but still...).

The MP20 is really well-built, and I'd be surprised if I ever had any problems with it. Got mine for $400 from ebay, and have never regretted a penny of it. It's as close to a "high-end" mic pre as I'll ever get, and even though it's a light year away from sounding like a Manley or Great River, etc., it's still a light year above what most people have been recording through for most of their lives (ie., cassette 4-track built-in mic preamps, and the like). I'd say go for it, and they still hold a really good resale value if you decided you didn't want to keep it.

hi,
I have got an mp20. I bought it used for 300 $. I am recording mostly acoustic sources, classical and jazz music, and I especially like the high headroom it has. If you can get a used one w/ Jensen transformers, even 400$ might be a fair price (these transformers alone cost more than 100$, afaik). Another point is that the opamps are socketed, so you can swap them with other compatible chips and "upgrade" your preamp a little bit.
BUT:
My other "preamp" is a behringer ultragain 2200. It hasn't as much headroom as the presonus. The build quality is way lower.
ANd it sounds *identically*. Maybe my monitoring setup isn't good enough (M1 actives and sonymdr7506 phones), but even if you can hear a difference on better monitors, it will be *very* subtle.
therefore, I wouldn't pay more than 300$ for the current mp20 w/o the jensens (120$ is a lot of money for 10dB more headroom and better pots).
regards
Harald

Yes, I should have mentioned that I have an older model, WITH Jensens. They're worth it.

Hey Tube Dude, I just found out Friday that I am being transferred to Louisville, I noticed you are from there. I hope its a great place to live, cause here I come!

You're kidding! You poor bastard! Its allright I guess.
I have a big pile of Burr Browns if you wanna try a pair in one channel and see how you like it. Let me know when you are here and settled in a little.

I have an opportunity to buy one used for $375. It is only one year old, I doubt it has the Jensen transformers.

It hasn't. Mine is from dec 99, and the manual still says "jensen transformers", but they aren't in it.

I got an MP20 when they first came out (actually had to wait for them to ship) and have been very satisfied. I also have a Tube MP and a Voicemaster - The MP20 is the most "transparent" of the three - which is ggod if that is what you are looking for.

I emailed Presonus and asked why they stopped using the Jensen transformers. I would attach a copy of their response but I can't figure out how to do it. Anyway, basically what they told me was that when they started making the MP-20, Jensen was the only mfr. that made a transformer that met their specs. Later another mfr. came along that met their specs and was more cost effective. They say most people cannot hear the difference but those who can say the Jensen's are a little darker, the other trans. are a little brighter. They say you can adjust the IDSS control to make one sound like the other, so to speak. I think I will buy the used one anyway, I am sure it is still a great sounding preamp.

Blinddog- if you buy it, we'll pop a Burr in ine channel and see how you like it... when you get here, that is...

Now I have a new opportunity to buy an MP-20 with the Jensen transformers and what this seller describes as "upgraded Military spec OP Amps (Analog Devices). He says this upgrade costs about $100 plus the Jensens and he wants $450. Ofcourse I can buy a brand new one for $469. Is this modified unit the way to go???

If it really has the Analog devices and the Jensens, and its not a hoax, then buy it... I would suggest a peek under the hood. Jensens will be marked as such, as will the AD opamps ( i think) THe anolog devices supposedly have a brighter more open sound, whereas the Burrs have a darker more colored sound, thicker. Both are considered upgrades to the standard opamps.

This might be interesting for those looking for a more "up to date" replacement of the 5534 that *does not* change the character of the mp20 very much. I just finished modding one chanel with two LT1468 opamps. Result is a slightly cleaner sound and a tad more gain. And the best thing is that they cost only 6 $ each. I bought them because of Monte McGuire's recomendation on RAP. He mentioned that the opa627 might "oscillate in just about everything not expressly
designed for their use".
