Presonus Firepod questions

So I have a few questions about using this piece of equipment and I'm not real familiar with this stuff so there some pretty basic questions.

1. I saw an example diagram of how/what you would hook into the FirePod and from the looks of things, the 8 inputs on the front look like they are TRS inputs, but in the diagram it showed mics hooking directly into these ports. How would you hook an XLR mic cable into a TRS input?

and

2. There are inputs for 8 separate instruments. Let's say I was recording a drum set and was using 5 mics for different sections of the drum set, when you record via FireWire and it goes into Cubase LE, are the 5 separate mics going to show up as 5 individual tracks so their levels and EQs can be adjusted separately or do all 5 mics just get blended into one track in Cubase?

Thanks for the help. If you think there's a Firewire interface that might be better, feel free to make recommendations!

The firepod inputs are neutrik combos which will take both 1/4" & xlr jacks.

Yes the mics can all be routed to seperate tracks in cubase. The presonus site has a cubase template you can download which will let yoi record 8 tracks at a time

8Pre instead?

Okay great I'm glad to hear that! I was scanning through the forums and found a lot of people mentioning latency problems with the FirePod and i also saw alot of people recommending the MOTU 8Pre instead. What I couldn't find though was anybody saying if there were latency problems with the 8Pre? Anyone know which is better in this area?

Why would there be latency problems with any decent interface? That's really the last thing I'd worry about....

I would pick the 8Pre, BTW. I have a pair of them and a FIREPOD. The 8Pre is just better, IMHO.

we used a firepod as a test to record an entire death metal album on a POS old slow PC..athlon 1800 I think. We did 3 msec to 6 msec input monitoring in reaper throughout till mix. I wouldnt worry about latency

heres the unmastered so far http://myspace.com/koama ONLY the firepod pres were used
