I have a couple of starved plate tube preamps - the Blue Tube & a behringer MIC100.
BOTH use the tubes to add colour (noise) to the signal - they don't actually do anything significant and def don't heat up enough to glow & do nice tube things.
They are designed to make us feel fuzzy/organic/analogue but def aren't going to heat up enough to ake us feel warm.
Upgrading the tube really is something to do when the tube has a significant function.
Both of the pres I have sound OK a replacement tube would be almost as expensive as the units were & if they were 2nd hand - NO WAY.

I agree with what you said there ,but as i use it for Guitars i felt a lil change in sound with the nob tube crank a little over 50% i felt it had a lil different feeling with the nos Tube i replace .the distortion sound it gave the guitar was a lil bit better sounded
