Hi there - very very new - just joined right now - starting to read up on how to set up my own home studio - i'm a voice over artist and would like any info that anyone could provide.

one term i've been noticing but would just like clarification on is -- What exactly is a preamp? I have an idea but if someone would clear it up I'd be thrilled.

Also - any info for equiptment specifially for a voice artist would be appreciated. I've done some research but am just lookinf for more!

thanks!!

The best way is to do a search on this site on "preamp"...

You'll get a lot of info.... :)

A preamp is basically a device that brings a mic signal up to line level...mic signals are very weak and plugging straight into a recorded renders an almost useless signal......

if you want a pc based studio, youll want a decent condenser mic, a decent preamp, and a decent soundcard and software program.....

do u have a $$$ budget inmind?.....

Alot of voiceover work that I've been familiar with made good use of EV RE-20 microphones. I would want a thick, forward sounding preamp, like an API or a 1272-alike.

like tubedude said, a re-20 is pretty much industry standard for voice overs. If you cant find one, an AT 4033 will work as well.

THe industry standard preamp for VOs is the symetrix 528. It has everything. sweepable parametric EQ,compression, expander, deesser, phantom power.

It sounds great on voice.

You can hear demos at

thanks and pc based studio question

Thanks for all the info.

I'm looking at a PC based studio - probably using SoundForge and CoolEdit 2000 - those are what were recommended to me.

Again, exclusively voice over work - if anyone has ideas, suggestions, comments on putting together pc based studio (soundcard, speakers, whatever) - i'd be more than happy to take in all info!

sorry for all the questions - but i guess that's what being a newbie is all about!!!

Cyan,
How did you come to this conclusion that is is the industry standard ?.

Keliza, I'm really a newbie too, but I downloaded Cool edit 2000 demo, and it doesn't work for multitrack recording, what you will need for multitrack recording is cool edit pro, I've used a little and it's pretty easy to use...
It doesn't support MIDI though...

But if don't need MIDI for now, it will be ok!

hi shailat,

I know because it can be found in pretty much every voice over artists studio. WHen I see VO on the net, I usually also see symetrix 528 and the ev re-20.

It was also designed as a voiceover preamp, hence the fame and the widespread use of it.

The Superlux is also a good equivilent to that ev. and alot cheaper at 150.00
