hey, do i need a preamp for all of these? or will they work ok without one. I am running them into a fostex without phantom power.

1. Marshall MXL V67G $99
2. Oktava MK319 $99
3. Audio Technica AT3035 $199
4. Rode NT1A $199
5. AKG C2000B $199

Hey, yeah, you need a preamp with phantom power for those mics.

generally speaking, condenser mics require phantom power and dynamics don't.

That's not really generally speaking. That's pretty much accross the board. :D Nothing general about it.

If you can't supply phantom pwr but want a condenser, some models will run off battery.

but there are things that i can buy that just supply phantom power....................i dont need a real preamp

Not if the Fostex's mic inputs have preamps built in (though you'll likely get a better result with an outboard preamp.)

the fostex doesnt have phantom power, so i will just buy a Rolls - PB23 Phantom Power Supply

that comes in at about 50 bucks, is it better to just spring ror an ART Preamp. those are like 70 i think

For $160 you can pick up a new M-Audio DMP3. It helped me get a better sound into my AW16G (which even has phantom power). It's considered a respectable budget preamp. $80 a channel.

I agree with tgm - no sense in wasting any money on the phantom box. If $160 is too much, an audiobuddy is only $80 with two channels, and although there are issues with its phantom voltage level under load, no one has complained that it's affected sound quality.

I used one of those Rolls phantom boxes when I was using a condensor for live playing through a board without phantom power. It was very noisy! Not suitable for recording.

Hey Chess, my old Sony ECM56 begs to differ with you on this. It say's "I don't need no stinking phantom power".

notbrad - You've got some real mics there, you NEED a real preamp.

An audiobuddy is around the same price range as the art pres and is a bit more highly regarded. Anything tube in that price range is a cheap gimmick. Honestly, if you are thinking about spending 200 dollars on a mic then you really should look into a decent preamp like the dmp3. A good mic pre is just as important as a good mic, if not more. Even the best mic in the world will sound like dog crap through a cheap mic pre.

M-Audio DMP3 = $149
SP VTB-1 = $129

Or you could buy a budget mixer.
