Hello folks! I sold my C1 and another mic and got a shure ksm27. I used to run the C1 thru a presonus tube pre and it mellowed out the "bright" and made it sound pretty good. Since the ksm27 has more of a "neutral" sound, I really need a better pre( I know the tube pre sucks:D). I plan on getting a more expensive pre when tax time comes around, but for now i wanted to get something like the dmp3. Would this be significantly better than the tube pre, or should i just wait till i can get the "good stuff"?

It would probably be better. Although for similar money you could get an Art MPA Gold, RNP, GT Brick, or other nice preamps. I got my DMP3 for $120 off of craigslist, and have no complaints on it's sound for the money. Sure the knobs feel different, and the buttons seem to rest at slightly different heights. But it sounds good.

In that price range the DMP3 is excellent. Another good pre in that price range is the Rane MS-1b. Both of these pres offer really clean uncoloured gain. Any of the others mentioned will give you a different sound but may not necessarily be "better".
I prefer to have a clean preamp so that I can tell how much the mic/room/placement etc is colouring the sound.
I love my DMP3 and the Tampa (which I picked up second hand for less than my DMP3) and I personally can't justify going for the FMR RNP or ART MPA gold etc. To get a significant increase in performance I'd have to spend a lot more money.

Thanks for the replys folks! Will get the dmp3. Tried selling the tube pre before but i couldn't sell it. I might as well just keep it for a door stopper. lol.

Dude.

You've been asking about this dmp3 thing for 2 freakin' years now.

Do you just work that slow, or do you just need that last bit of reassurance before you buy it? Seriously. :D Have you not yet gotten a sufficient amount of opinion about it yet? A search of threads / posts from Tone_aot with the keyword "DMP3" ....

Like, shit or get off the pot already dude.
.

Lol. Everytime i was about to buy it i had a bill or somethin come up. I'm not rich like yall.:D Thanks for taking time out of your day to review my old posts.:D

......RNP, GT Brick, or other nice preamps.

These are your minimum choices. Anything else you are just jacking up the price. Save your money for the good ones......

and come back after you buy one......

There's been a pair of TubePre's floating around the local craigslist for about three weeks now. Maybe they're still there because he wants too much for them ($300 for both). Or maybe it's still there because no one wants them. I know that when my DMP3 and Mobile Pre showed up, I had to jump on those quickly. So I know good preamps move quickly locally.

You could do what the guy did to me. Sell the TubePre as part of a package with a really nice mic. It's what got me to buy a used Art Tube MP for $50. That I'll probably sell tomorrow for $25 since you can get them new for $30 online now. I thought about keeping it around for any paying gigs that might pop up. But then again, I haven't had a paying gig in over a decade.

How much reassurance do you need? :D The DMP3 is a great pre, you can't go wrong with it, and you can't really beat it for the price.

the DMP3 gets recommended because it's a good pre. I had one, i had the tube pre and took it back, but both were better than my stock yamaha pre's in the MD8. The DMP3 let me hear the different sounds of the mics better, if that makes sense.

slapping a RNC on it was frkn uptown in my mind. I was like WOW....

then I went for another gearlust upgrade, trading for a channel strip which is really nice, but I can't say it's "better".... i still have a WOW! thing with the DMP3/RNC combo...a paradigm shift you might say.

the gang around here has some great advice, there's some spam, but most part its pure gearhead free advice.:D
