Harshin on the Sebatron? I don't get it...

For cheap hybrid: VTB-1
For less cheap hybrid: Summit 2BA something or other

Your budget is really going to dictate what you get; I'm guessing VTB1...

Something elese I forgot to mention: A well designed tube circuit will not have any more distortion, noise, etc... than a solid state circuit. The "tube warmth" thing is more of a marketing gimmick than anything else. Yes, the Manley and the Vipre sound great, and they are tube, but there is a reason they coust a couple thousand dollars. A $75 Bellari is not going to be in the same league. (Not that it isn't usable, it's just not going to be the holy grail of warmth simply because it has a tube in it)

Real, well thought out tube circuits are expensive to implement when compared to solid state. You can get into a really good SS preamp for about $500/ch. If you want to be in that same quality range with a tube preamp, you are sitting closer to $1000/ch. When you are just starting out and you will only have one outboard preamp, it is best to go with a SS preamp because you get more bang for the buck.

That's very true, Jay. A well-designed tube pre will actually tend to sound surprizingly transparent. Where the difference will come in to play is how it will handle clipping. A well-designed tube circuit will almost always handle it much more gracefully. But not always ... particularly when you're talking about the hypbrid units, because oftentimes there will be a solid state portion of it that is clipping before, or along with, the tube stage. And that's not always a pretty thing to listen to, so you have to be careful when you purposely try to "drive" these things. Just because it has a tube stage doesn't mean you're safe.

If you really try and push an ART Tube mp for example, keep in mind that the distortion you're hearing is a TL074 opamp breaking up. :D (And although a TL074 will break up a lot more gracefully than a bi-polar ... it's still not the prettiest thing).

I reccomend the line6 ux2...it does give you the choice of 6 diferent preamp sounds...and should go pretty good with that at3035...Im using an AKG c414 with nice results there...and it makes my SP C1 sound better than any other inexpensive preamp Ive tried.

Expensive preamps are warmer

I find that statement way off the mark. It totally depends...."warm" isnt always a desired trait either.. for example...DACS Clarity...Millennia HV-3, GML 8302, Grace 802...

not what I would call "warm" but damn sure expensive.
