preamp question

when recording drums, should each mic be run through the same preamp? Not literally the SAME pre but lets say i have 2 channels of one, 4 of another and so on. Im just wondering if its acceptable and/or will you notice that say toms 2 and 3 are a lot more clear or warmer than other drums. Or maybe the 2 overheads are ran through the same pre and toms on another and so on? It would make buying them a lot easier with this info.
I'd be using 7-10 mics if that makes a difference.

I'd generally suggest that the toms should be mic'd with similar mics and preamps (floor toms... depends), the overheads should certainly be matched up pretty well if you're looking for them to work well together.

right on right on. what about the room mic, or if i decide to mic the hi-hat or something like that? should those be the same as the OH mics as well? *the pres of the over head mics*

I agree with John that stereo pairs like overheads should have identical signal chains. But in the grand scheme of things, which preamp you use hardly matters. Especially compared to what microphones you use, the quality of the source you're recording, and of course the room you record in.

I agree. I mix and match mic pres on drum on virtually every record I make
