I walk the line
Don't worry, I'm not gonna ask what's the best pre under $X. I just wondered if th4e people with V67's had any particular recommendations for a pre that seems to complement that particular mic. I've always been under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that preamps were like mics in that what works best for one type of voice won't necessarily be the best for another. For instance, someone might have a V67 and a C1 (or whatever) and also an Audio Buddy and a Joe Meek something. Maybe they like their V67 on the Audio Buddy better than the Meek, but they prefer the Meek with the C1? So what I'm asking is not what pre do you like the best, but what pre do you like the best for your V67 in particular?

If those with a V67 who have already posted mp3's would tell me what pre they used, I could go have a listen to the various combo's. Not very scientific, I know, but it's the best I could come up with.

What I would really like, is for someone with a V67 and more than one pre, to post snippets of the same material on the same mic, but different pre's, but I think that's probably a lot to ask.

I hope they open the archives back up for searches soon.

Thanks to all.

The Audio Buddy is an OK pre. I have a C1 though. I kind of pefer to use the audiobuddy with instruments that need to be clean. Vocals I really dig color and warmth so I use the Bluetube.

One thing I dont like about the audiobuddy is that you need to have access to both sides to use it, so I plan on doing a modification to mount a phantom power switch on the front and put it into a rack box along with a small compressor.

I've kind of noticed that the v67 seems to have a lot of character to it on it's own, so I rather like it on a more neutral-sounding preamp. Using the Joemeek on it is almost like color overload. :)

Thanks for the reply, but yeah, I was kinda looking for what those with V67's recommended for THAT mic specifically. Some have said that they consider the V67 & C1 extremely similar, so I'll take that into consideration. And thanks for the heads up about the need for access to both sides. Might become a factor later.

Chessrock,

Thanks. That's the kind of info I was looking for. Do you think a V67 would be too harsh on a JM, or just too much of a particular freq boost? And what sort of a mic would compliment a JM best?

I'm actually excited to hear how a guitar amp will sound when mic'ed with the v67 through the Meek. I get the feeling I'll have to roll off a lot of the bass, but I am looking forward to trying it out.

I probably shouldn't have replied, as these are just my guesses. :) I don't want to mislead anyone. It could wind up sounding orgasmic with the meek for all I know. From my experience, though, it just seems that if the mic already has a lot of character, I like to try and let that character show through without trying to add any more, if you know what I mean.

On the same token, if you have a preamp with lots of character, then a clean, neutral-sounding mic might let that character show through better without adding any more of it's own to the mix.

Cool! I'm looking at doing fiddly things like this to rack mount other gear like this that wasn't originally intended for the rack. Please post and let us know what happens, huh?

I've used a v67 with several pres (Presonus MP20, Focusrite Voicemaster, Art Tube MP, Behringer V2000).

Now I've convinced myself that the whole mic pre hype is way overblown (at least in the price range I'm working in). But that being said, I did like the v67 through the MP20 best, followed by the Tube MP (these are both mic pre's vs. channel strips)

The Focusrite and the Behringer were close behind - but did color the sound more (they are both channel strips, vs. pre's). For what it's worth, I think the V2000 ain't bad for the price (with all due respect to the Behringer bashers). It's clearly a direct ripoff of the Voicemaster - but for a fraction of the cost it compares well.

I think the post about the Meek is very logical. I think the "Meek sound" would add too much color to a v67.

Hey Harvey!

Dear Mr. Gerst,
Would you agree that a V67/Joemeek combo will render a too "colored" result? Or is this another lesson in audible mental masturbation? Thanks ----ROB

I've never heard any Joe Meeks equipment, so I can't comment on it. Most of the time, the V67G goes directly into the board preamp, or into a Great River MP-2.

Mental masturbation? :) Isn't that a Sammy Hagar song? Man, some of you guys just crack me up.

All I was saying is that the v67 has a lot of character on it's own. The Joemeek has a lot of character on it's own. Neither of these toys really NEEDS any help from the other in the character department. Whether or not these characters are complimentary, conflicting, or neither isn't up to Dad (Harvey) to decide. It's what sounds good to you and what works with your style of music.

I - can't - drive . . . 55! What ever happened to the Red Rocker, anyway?

"It's what sounds good to you and what works with your style of music."

You mean if it sounds right, it IS right?

Thanks for the quick responses Harv and Chessmeister ;)

Hagar? He's hawking a premium tequila. Spends a lot of time in Cabo. My former drummer's stalking him is how I know this.

I run mine through a joe meek, sounds cool to me. But thats the only pre I own, other than the ones in my A&H board.

That's kinda' creapy.

It would be sort of like hearing that two of your ex-girlfriends just ran off together. :)

Its a funny thing but I saw Sammys first show after he left Van Halen, and Before the show I was watching from 5 rows back a dude that looked exactly like Steve Vai tweaking on the guitar setup. I was really psyked by this. Ends up he was just the Roadie, and another dude was playing the guitar.

Henry Rollins opened for him It was a decent show.
