I would move that 421 to the kick and put the sm7b on snare.

I like the tone I get out my kick drum when the 421 is in it, but it seems too puny on the low end to be a useful kick drum mic. Unfortunately I'm finding that I have the same opinion of the SM7...

the focusrites made the cymbals sound smoother and more resolved (not as grainy). subtly more punchy. they will make a difference, albeit a small one. obviously, the signal chain before the pre will make more noticeable differences.

it has to be more obvious as 44.1 wav files, tho.

Okay...I tried again. Nada. Nothing. Zip. I am at work on headphones, but that shouldn't make the test completely invalid. I understand wanting the best sound, expecially when stacking tracks. But if the difference is so subtle that I have to be in my studio in front on my reference speakers to hear it--is it worth it.

I'll bet I could stitch these tracks together and folks couldn't tell where the change from one pre to another is.

The easier way to hear the difference is to switch between takes right away... Don´t listen to the whole thing and try to "remember" how it sounded...
Switch back and forth and listen different sections of the song...
btw, I heard the samples with a hifi system, not monitors...

I agree, and this makes me think that I should avoid using the Tascam pres for any sound source that could conceivably get harsh (drum OHs, guitar amps, etc).

good idea. sometimes I think about getting an isa428. per channel, it seems like a good deal, even considering that I would never add the a/d
