given a choice, would you record an alternatice-style rock kit in a big, unflattering room with lots of baffles and absorbtion, or in a room about large enough for 2 drum kits? the big room is a huge rectangle, at least 30 feet by 20
feet b 20 feet, and the small room has irregular dimensions and a 9-foot ceiling.

i'm planning on two mic setups, for 2 different sounding kit setups.

1) beta 57 on snare, e604 on the bottom (i'll scrap it later if i don't like it but it's so easy to clip on!), 604's on toms, an e602 and SM58 (for beater) on the kick and Rode NT5's in x-y (or maybe spaced pair for more cymbals, not sure yet) as OHs.
This setup is for a nice wide stereo spread

2) same kick, snare and toms, but a single Rode NTV (an older Rode mic, it's a tube, slightly warmer but noisier than the NTK) as a mono overhead with an NT5 to pick up the higher end hi-hat detail. I'd like it to be really sizzly.
This setup for a tighter, more focused kit. Or so i hope

I'll be tracking through a couple of different pres:
The Behringer MX2642 mixer, the toms and bottom of the snare
A Digitech VTP-1, for the top of the snare
A Focusrite Tonefactory for the kick, and
RNP for the OH's
Digi 002 pre's for something that doesn't quite work.

I'll compress with an RNC and an ART TCS.

so with all that in mind - i put all that stuff down so you guys don't have to ask later... which room would you use? I can get blankets, big foam pads, big reflective surfaces... anything really. Please give any advice that you think will be helpful

thanks very much in advance.

I'm recording a brand-new Taye kit
