Wouldn't normalizing just amplify the characteristics of the track? Sure some nuances would be lost, but others would be brought to the forefront for better or worse...

Normalising would cover up valuable differences in the preamps

Unless we are talking about RMS normalization--and I see no evidence of that in the files--I don't agree with that statement.

Experiments often stem from hypotheses, not theories. A theory that hasn't been tested or backed up by observation is not a theory.

Craig

Hypothesis testing is supposed to test a theory that has already been put forward though, right? A hypothesis is based upon a theory, previously tested or untested.

The main argument is that his experiements were not "scientific" and more qualitative than quantitative.

Your right Rory I should have said science not experiments.

We're kinda getting off topic here but briefly I'll concede that Freud was indeed an important figure in the history of psychology. In fact very important with regard to his writings on the existance and importance of the unconsious mind (although I don't think he invented the idea). He did have a tendency to get a little bit carried away with himself though. But overall a great man.

The program was good. Glasgow Uni is a well respected institution. He was covered briefly in year one then we moved on to the real stuff.

Anyway what I really wanted to say was that I never studied Freud in enough detail to tell you what he would have said about me withholding the names of the preamps.

Ok... so is the experiment valid or not?

So does anyone want to listen to the .wav files or does everyone think this is a waste of time?

I don't know if it was RMS normalization I right clicked the event in cubase and clicked normalize.

Before normalizing the files were quite close in volume as well.

Yip... Theory >> Hypothesis >> experiment.

I feel that preamp A has a certain grainy smoothness that is at times overshadowed by the exquisitely defined, yet also subdued texture of what could only be described as a veritable explosion of velvety pillows of delicate roundness and a simultaneous robust, commanding definition in all frequency ranges. I am immediately reminded of the rich smell of tanned leather and the feel of the wind against my face during a warm fall day.

In stark contrast, preamp B demonstrates a rich fullrange clarity combined with the comfort of a billowy soft cloudlike fluffiness which both seem to explode simultaneously producing a texture that is quite subtle and yet also very defined. These qualities only occasionally overshadow a bit of smooth graininess that is never harsh but rather very satisfying. I could say that this preamp brings to mind the smell of aged wood and the feel of the wind against my face during a mild spring day.

Wow! You're hired to review my next album and do the voiceover for that upcoming douche commercial.

I'd say you like to pull numbers out of thin air.

I'll pull my cock out of your mouth, too, if you'll just quit bitching and post the results.

As soon as the talk of douche and Freud ends this thread will drop off the page and we will never know.

OK, god damn it, I voted. I hope you're happy.

Was I supposed to do anything before I voted?

I guess whatever point he is trying to make here will have to go to the grave with him. There's no way there is 100 people here that are going to vote on this shit. I think the new fella needs a lesson on how things work around here.

"Kick his ass, Seabass." ummm... for the uneducated, that's a quote from the greatest movie ever made.
