pre for raspy reggae vocals

for 500 bucks a channel, I don't think you're going to see vast differences in quality. /cue angry FMR fans/

A mic pre doesn't care what it records.

That said, I'd save up and get a couple of channels of something really special that you won't want to replace.

$500 is getting pretty close to a DAV BG-1 (with the exchange rate where it is)... you will hear the difference in this pre.., I haven't used it with the SM7, but I feel it would be a match made in heaven... SM7's on my short list for mics... so I'll let you know when I pull the trigger...

Focusrite Trakmaster is pretty clean at that price. Look for an early Mk1 version (no VU meters).

Sorry...disagree on the Trackmaster. Doesn't even come close to being the same league as almost anything else in the $500 range. The BG1 is a great suggestion, but after shipping from the UK it'll be way up over $500 won't it? The RNP is a great suggestion...I have one...but the SM7 needs a lot of gain, and if it's a quiet source the noise floor gets pretty high. Got any DIY skills? You could build a fantastic pre for way under $500...look here.

I don't know... I got mine very early direct from Mick, paid under $600 shipped when the rate was close to 2 to 1... it's currently at about $1.40. I haven't been looking at the prices... but it's got me wondering

With customs my DAV came close to $700.

I use it for overheads and love the pres, however.

The only way to get raspy reggae vocals, is to get a raspy reggae singer. Think Beres Hammond, not Bob Marley.

That's kind of my point, if you've had it for six months or more, it would be closer to $500 today... If you got it recently, then Mick's raised his prices...

I read all this stuff about matching the singer to the mic and matching the mic to the pre, but when I ask which goes with which, I don't really get any definitive answers. Maybe I didn't ask the right question.

How about if I said: I want a one channel preamp, made especially for vocals(no bells and whistles), to be used with an sm7 for $500(plus or minus $200) and my singer is Beres Hammond?

I'm lookin at: Daking Mic Pre One; Grace 101(but I have small maybe poor quality room); joe meek one q and maybe I'll break the bank for UA solo 610 or focusrite voicemaster

Yeah, I know...that's the question. I've built a couple, and I had to be very careful. It's definitely doable with decent soldering skills as long as you're careful.
