I'm researching preamps in the $500 range to go with the sm7 to make a fat raspy reggae vocal. Beres Hammond style; not Bob Marley
any ideas?

$500 is getting pretty close to a DAV BG-1 (with the exchange rate where it is)... you will hear the difference in this pre.., I haven't used it with the SM7, but I feel it would be a match made in heaven... SM7's on my short list for mics... so I'll let you know when I pull the trigger...I'm researching preamps in the $500 range to go with the sm7 to make a fat raspy reggae vocal. Focusrite Trakmaster is pretty clean at that price. Look for an early Mk1 version (no VU meters).
I don't know... I got mine very early direct from Mick, paid under $600 shipped when the rate was close to 2 to 1... it's currently at about $1.40. I haven't been looking at the prices... but it's got me wonderingThe BG1 is a great suggestion, but after shipping from the UK it'll be way up over $500 won't it?
That's kind of my point, if you've had it for six months or more, it would be closer to $500 today... If you got it recently, then Mick's raised his prices...With customs my DAV came close to $700.
Sorry...disagree on the Trackmaster. Doesn't even come close to being the same league as almost anything else in the $500 range. The RNP is a great suggestion...I have one...but the SM7 needs a lot of gain, and if it's a quiet source the noise floor gets pretty high. Got any DIY skills? You could build a fantastic pre for way under $500...look here.

This is appealing but do I have to really know electronics for it to work out?
