I LOST THE GAME
Hey. Im gonna have alittle extra money after chrismas and want to know a nice pre amp for less than 200$. maybe alittle more if it has at least 4 pre's. I would use it with the m-audio fast track ultra. would i need seperate pre's? Thanks :D

So, it looks like the 4 pre's on the front are switchable to the 4 LineIns on the back. I'd use the pre's on the front as is. That leaves you LineIns 5 and 6 on the back to add 2 more pres. DMP3 will get you two more good pres within your budget. M-Audio DMP-3 | Sweetwater.com

Why so many Tyson? Are you to record drums?

You need a preamp for a guitar, but not for a line-out on a guitar amp. A line out is strong of a signal to run into a preamp. Line level signals are waaay stronger than mic signals - That's what a preamp does, it boosts mic level to line level. A line-out is already boosted to line level (which is why it's called a line out). Run those line-out's directly to a line-in on your interface. No preamp required.

Which is actually the opposite of what you asked now that I re-read your post, so let me switch it around: You can't plug a mic into a line-in - the line-in is expecting a strong line level signal. A mic signal is very weak, and a line-in will NOT boost it at all. You can eat the mic and scream into it, and you'll be registering peaks of like -60dbFS, which is barely audible.

hey. i wanted to go: mic/preamp's LINE out/interface's line in. The interface have only four xlr inputs but 6 line inputs. so i wanted to know if i could have 6 mics
Thanks though! :D

Yup- So, if you want to run 6 mics at once, just get a 2 channel pre to connect to line in 5 and 6 on the back and use the 4 front panel pres.
