is there such a plug-in made that works as a pre-amp. So you could put that plug on a track and then send the output of that to the track you want to record to so the pre-amp volume and colour are recorded to HD?
Its just that i dont have a pre-amp or mixer so i am going straight into my line in from my guitar effects unit.
I know this is the worst way to record guitar as i am totally into my pure real tones, but its just for mucking about at home.

pre amp is just that PRE AMPLIFICATION before it HITS(key word BEFORE) tape/HD...

now answer your own question....

there are a bunch of plugs that can color the sound like one of those virtual amps like amplitube or Rock amp legends by Bluetube

Ok cheers, just thought there might be a plug that is acts actually like a real tube pre amp or something.

Well, honestly, with 1200+ post here in just over a year, I would say he just about DOES live on this board :)

That said, not everyone immediately gets the point of a pre-amp. In fact, so much time is spent talking about how this pre colours things compared to that pre, it's easy to forget that the real purpose is the bring the mic level up to the line level.

You cannot do that once you've passed the line-in, it's already too late.

Nice one cheers.
Yeah ive spent alot of time on this site since i broke my heel and havent been able to walk for a few months, so ive been stuck in the house mostly. My post rate was like 0.5 posts a day not long ago!! Im slowly going mad!

Im learning alot but i still need to ask questions that some might find silly as i dont know certain things that people take as common knowledge.
I knew that the primary purpose of the pre-amp is to boost the level going in, but i thought it could maybe be done using a plug-in to boost the level.
