Pre-amp in MR-8?

Can someone please tell me whether there is pre-amp in the MR-8?

Also, I know that the MR-8 does not have phantom power, does that mean that if I were to buy a tube mic or a condenser mic, I would have to buy phantom power as well?

Hi,

There is mic simulator mode: Dynamic, Condenser and Tube.
I have also used a m-audio duo pre-amp in standalone mode and the imp pre-amp built into the UB mixer input into the Mr-8 (all pretty lo-end gear). So far I like the way my voice sounds best when:
I record with a sm-58 with no effects directly into the mr-8 and then go back and add about 10% reverb.

I would also like to know...

Is it true that a condensor mic can't be plugged directly into the MR-8? I just ordered a Studio Projects B1 to use with an MR-8. Do I need some other source of phantom power to make it work?

Thanks :)

I use an Electro Voive PL 78, which is a condenser, it uses a very odd battery, but with the battery in place, it works just fine (with quite a bit of high end, i might add) Oddly, I like the cheap Nady that came with the MR 8 kit from Musicians Friend, a dynamic that seems to very under rated.
I'm starting to think it really is more about placement, playing dynamics, etc. than what mic (though there was that Sennheiser that did look interesting...).
Oh lets face it, this is all alot of fun, no matter how much work it is, otherwise how could I explin 343 takes of one song...(lol)

To answer your question, in the back of the owners manual, the schematic shows a preamp. So I guess yes.
Phantom power...no. However, I have a behringer ub1002 that has phantom power. It's pretty cheap.

Hi,
While we're on the topic ! I tried an ART Tube Pac pre-amp / compressor. I jacked up the gain on the ART until it started clipping - set the compressor threshold at 0 so it would kick in if the source volume go too loud and output level at about 4 and set the xlr mic gain at about half on the MR-8 bring the mr-8 maxing at about the top bar 1. Using a Shure SM-58 and a hint of reverb - I am very happy with the results. I didn't even have to hit the mr-8 Bright button. Now, If only I could sing decent !!
