I just bought a AKG 3000B studio condenser mic, which i heard is very good, and i need to buy a pre-amp for it now and i want one that will use all the quality that my new mic has. i really don't know much about pre-amps and just need some advice. the interface i am using with my computer is the roland ua-30, so it has a 1/4 in. input. thanks much!

Welcome to the board... you might wanna try doing a search on this subject using the search function. A good place to start would be to do a search for Studio Projects VTB-1. That will get you a ton of results and you can see many other preferences within those threads.

Thanks RF

It IS good. The C3000 is my choice for my vocals. I like it better than anything I've tried. Not that your results will be the same but for MY particular voice and music it cuts through nice and really keeps the detail in a thick rock mix.

Don't listen to people who hate by brand or model. Listen to only your ears. This si the best all around advice for home recorders.

PS. I like my Alesis compressor, the gates are the shitty part.

BTW, I use an event EMP1 pre for mine, sounds pretty good.

Yes, I don't speak for Littledog, but I had responded much the same when I saw the statement about hearing that the C3000 was pretty good. Namely, "Well, you didn't hear it here!"

Gentlemen, I must weigh in. The C-3000 isn't the best mic but it's way far the worst. I have one and it's not the first one I reach for for vocals but it can definately work very well there. It kicks ass as a floor tom mic. I've used it on stand up acoustic bass and it worked great there too.

all is in the eye of the beholder

One thing i have learned throughout the years, is that when ever it comes to sound, it is all in the ear of the one producing the sound. Many people think many things. I was just in the dark about pre-amps and wanted many opinions. So that is why I am here. Thanks.

Let's see, Jake endorses the C3000, the 3630...

hmmmm... can I interest you in an Alesis X-2 mixer or an Oktava 219?

If that is the Oktava I think it is, it sounds like spit.
I almost threw up after I threw one up.

I use my Alesis compressor on the outputs of my drum module, works perfect for that. I only draw envelopes for vocals and mic ins. The Gates on the Alesis suck butt, I never use them. Even shitty gear has a use. That compressor introduced me to the concept, I owe it that much.

Use ears... not opinions...

Pre Amp

I have an AKG 300B mic and use a Studio Projects VTB1 pre-amp. I remember the difference when I first used the VTB1 preamp it it was like night and day compared to the pre-amps in my Yamaha AW16G.

Anyway as you will see in another thread I am considering upgrading my AKG mainly due to a recommendation by a friend (I think it's OK for vocals). The Rode NT2A seems to fit the bill for me. However, I am going to try and hire one first before I take the plunge.

What's really amusing about this thread is someone just decided to try and give me negative rep points for comments I made in 2002! :p

The otherwise anonymous attempt was accompanied by the comment: "Don't believe the reviews, the C3000 is a great mic!"

Well, my friend, I've never seen a review of the C3000, good or bad. (Actually, it's very rare to find a bad review of ANY product, but that's a different topic).

I have owned one for many years (as well as a C1000) and I can assure you my opinions are based on actual experience. I've long given up trying to find an application for either where they did less than suck.

For those who like this mic, that is your right. But when you recommmend it to others, one would have to assume that you liked it better than a number of other mics that you also tried. I would be really curious as to what those other mics are.
