I don't see the need to buy a mixer (not that I wouldn't want one). Isn't it so that a mic preamp already has preamps, a mic/line level switch and phantom power (most of the time anyway)?

What is the advantage of having a mixer or having a mixer AND a preamp?

I use Logic's last version for PC, and frequentyl record bass & guitar with good results. O yeah, I have a Delta 1010 Soundcard.

A mixer is mostly useful if you need preamps for multiple mics (like miking a drumkit or a jazz ensemble). Depending on the mixer (and soundcard/computer), you could potentially send each mic to a separate channel/track in your recording software. Mixers are also useful for adding outboard effect loops, live recording, and mixing down to analog media. If you are only doing one instrument at a time and overdubbing, you probably don't need a mixer. An outboard preamp and your delta will work fine.

Thanks. And if I would want to record vocals, do I need a (physical) pre-amp for my mic to plug in?

Or can i Plug my mic in on the XLR on my soundcard (as I ask this, I don't think so)?

The 1010 does not have XLR or pre-amps, The 1010LT does have two XLR and two pre-amps.

You're right. I forgot to add LT.

Well, can I plug my mic in on the XLR-connections on the soundcard, since it has two mic pre-amps?

Or do i need a (physical) Mic pre-amp for it?

Thanks in advancce....

Those should work just fine. The preamp is really just a glorified volume knob that also powers condensor mics and takes care of impedance matching. Dedicated preamps may offer sonic pleasantries that some people prefer over built-in pres from soundcards and mixers. Try out your Delta's pres and see what you think. If you are satisfied, go with it. If not, look into adding an external preamp.
