I'm planning on ordering the ART Pro Channel soon, and would like to know how many and what kind of cables I'm going to need to use it with my firepod.

1 channel preamp - you'll need one 1/4" TS cable, or 1 XLR cable to run from the preamp output to one of the firepod's inputs. The preamp and firepod both can use either.

So I wouldn't need a second cable to return the signal to the firepod?

No, you only need one cable to run the output of the preamp to the input of the firepod. You'll plug your mic into the ART preamp, and the preamp into the firepod. You shouldn't run the preamp as in insert, that's for fx. If you did, you'd be running a line level input into the ART preamp, which is designed for a much weaker mic signal.
