A power amp will supply signal to passive speakers/monitors. It could also drive a guitar cab.... basically anything involving speakers (passive, not active).

Yo Virus:

I'd like to add a few words to what the Bear told you.

You can also use an integrated power amp, Like the Yam 592 AX.

This amp has power and it will let you plug in two tape decks, a CD, Phone, am/fm if you want it, and has a clear through switch to cancel any color from the amp. You can record either way from the tape decks. The is also an AUX plug in and you can plug in two sets of monitors. I have monitors and commercial hi/fi speakers attached and I can turn on one set or both or shut them both off.

Other power amps usually only serve the speakers/monitors. Depends how you like to set up your rig.

Whoa.... great information. I am not sure what I want to do yet... but I am considering what you just mentioned.

Another question now....

what is a tape deck and would I need it if I am using the VF160?

Yo Virus:

A tape deck is a tape recorder. I know that almost everyone burns CD's today. So do I. But, I find my tape decks an asset in many ways. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and just need to send someone a copy of something, Voila -- tape works.

Before I got into doing CD's, I used to run my recordings to tape but of course, CD's are better.

Look at the Sony ES model tape decks as they are very good but a JVC dual tape deck will serve you well for less money.

A tape deck differs from a tape recorder in that the former usually lacks a power amplifier and the latter includes one (or two) and sometimes speakers, as well. However, the terms are often used interchangeably.

Yea, verily Derek:]

I have two tape decks -- they are amped by the Yam integrated box.

I think I will be investing in a tape deck sometime soon.
