Amp, I'm using ez drummer for drums but the bigger problem is the bass, 8x out of 10 sounds like crap. I mean I was looking for that big bass amp sound like many of these modern metal bands have. I"m guessing they mic their bass amps... but right now I just use the free plug-in that came with cubase 5. Okay so I do this for hobby and I have a DeArmond active pickup bass but there has got to be a better way.

I am another amateur blessed with an abundance of cheap mics. Lately I have been recording both guitars and vocals with different mics for different parts. I have found that cheap mics often give PART of a good sound. By combining 2 cheap mics on 1 signal the sum is often better than the parts.
Ex: lead vox track: AT 2020 and AKGSe5/ce1 on xy for lead vox, Sterling 51 for Backing vox.
Guitar: EV 628L off-axis close with SPB1 6 feet or so away on rythm,.....reverse for leads...

EQ'ing could get similar results? Not sure, thats what I do to enhance the bass sound in drums

You are comparing your unfinished mix to a mastered recording ?
If so, maybe whack a multiband compressor across your master mix channel.
This one cost me less than $50 from memory. It has some very cool enhancer/excitor features that teach you a lot about using subtlety when slamming the crap of out of your mixes
. Think of it as a more user friendly version of Ozone. I run the Transparent brickwall across the master - the "Soundgoodizer" presets are best used in very tiny moderation. Will definitely bring your bass out.http://www.image-line.com/documents/maximus.html
Not sure if you can get a free version of Guitar Rig from Native Instruments site anymore. The bass amp presets are pretty good.
