That was cool....the style of music and the Super 8 film go well together. I assume though that you transfered the film to digital format for the editing and transition FX?

I havent shot with Super 8 in years!
Still have some stuff I did many years ago that I transfered to VHS at some point, and then to DVD.....but I have no idea what happend to my camera....?
Not sure who develops film around here....but that's a nice option to have for a music video, that "old" B&W film look....rather than just trying to add it as an FX to digital video. A cool alternative to all the HD stuff everyone is doing.

Yep, we did edit on a computer (I'm sure it would be fun to edit with the splicer but we just don't have the know-how).
For about half the footage, I just videotaped the projected film off the wall (I wouldn't recommend this is you can afford a pro transfer). For the other footage we used this great place in Toronto called Frame Discreet. They scan every frame individually and I found their quality really good (even with our amateur camerawork). I know there's a great place in Spain and a few in the USA.
You should try to find that camera Miroslav, I'd love to see what you come up with. I reckon if you plan things ahead and are careful you could do a vid for a short song with as few as 3 cartridges.
 
Cool promo clip -- I've got a super 8 camera, but have only messed around with it (films look cool, but are more of a 'test' nature). Some nice people in Georgia actually did a Super 8 clip for us a few years ago though ... here it is if anyone wants to see it ... I think I posted it here awhile back:

Freelove Fenner: great sound, guys. You really have some lovely guitar grooves! I'm a film forever kind of guy myself, so I love seeing super 8 music videos. You shot on Tri-X, I presume? What a wonderful film.

On a different note, there's a guy in Texas who I discovered randomly through youtube, named Paul Millar. And I think he and his band Slugbug really do an amazing job on the analog recordings plus analog video (super 8 + vhs) combo.

I think all of us here will dig his disclaimer at the end.

Oh, nice. I bet he likes Bill Nelson circa. 1978. Slugbug has stronger melodies though, I think.

Incidentally, your album arrived today. I will listen to it in due course, right now I'm preparing to mix mine...

I'll have to check out Bill Nelson. I was hearing Sparks and Devo a bit in it myself. Pretty fun stuff, I hope the guy's record does well.

He made a LOT of albums, but I only have one at the moment. From about 1983 until the early 2000s they were done on a Fostex B16. 'Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam' is the one that Slugbug resembles, which was recorded in 1978 but the label refused to release it until New Wave happened.

This song was released as a single around 1981, IIRC it got to about #30 in the UK charts. He shot the video at his home on 8mm film.

How goes the mixing JP?

Heh. The single actually only made 52 or something, but the parent album hit number 7, something he never really managed to equal. From randomly picking things from his later work it does seem to have drifted away from what he was doing on 'Quit Dreaming'.

As for mine, I've finished it last night. I am going to have to sit down and listen to it all critically though, decide which take of the second song I am going to use and whether anything needs to be mixed again.

I might put up one of them here at some point, but since I mix on headphones I usually get the thing mastered and that won't happen until next year.

If you are interested, here's a quick listening copy I made. I think I am going to have to redo the last track on side 1 because the minimoog was noticeably off-key:


...also the last couple of tracks on side 2 are 'bonus' ones that I remixed from the original tapes as an afterthought rather than doing a complete or partial rerecording.

As for your 'Breezy Manner' album, it's rather nice. Seems a bit more keyboard-heavy than the previous release. I think 'Lash and Brow' is my favourite track.


Thanks for introducing me to Slugbug though - I'm really enjoying 'Truck Month'.

Yeah I love that Slugbug stuff too. I only discovered him because of a very funny Farfisa organ technical video he posted on Youtube (well worth watching if you're into combo organs).
This is our newest super 8 vid. We were able to do it pretty cheaply this time because we story-boarded a bit and didn't waste film.

ethyrvalve how did you develop the super 8 film and make those really awesome transparent video of the guitar and bass? The womans voice is also nicely recorded. What mic or compressor are you using?

Yeah thanks for asking. I haven't shot any motion picture film yet, but I do have something I put together with a 35mm still camera. It's about as primitive as you can get, but only cost me about $30.00 to make, so I call that a win. (BTW I love the new video. Thorough planning in pre-production can make all the difference! Have you heard of the Straight-8 film festival? You get one roll of super 8 - all cuts and edits have to be done in-camera at the time of shooting, so it's all 3-minute short films - pretty cool idea.)

Also, Mark7, if you ever read this, I adore Douglas Adams. Very classy signature.
